I wouldn't be surprised for a company to fall for it, the part where they said they won in court is the part that's pure fantasy

Yeah, the scam isn't hard. Most large corporations will pay invoices under a certain threshold without questioning it because investigating the bill costs more in labor than just paying it. The fantasy is this guy's magic loophole that was defended in court instead of sending him to prison for 5 years like the guy in your article.
