Upvoted because it's criticising the un-united shithole of america with satire and also because people need to be made aware of the history of america that conservatives want to hide from you

Nobody's really hiding the existence of slaves, so I'm not sure what you're trying to say here

[–] [email protected] 43 points 2 years ago

It's not so much hiding as glazing over. The fact that anyone would argue that the civil war was about 'states rights' should tell you how poorly we recall our history

I'll never forget reading a textbook in high-school that acknowledged the genocide of the Native Americans before quickly moving on to talk about how stately and wise the people who killed them were

There are some crazies out there. Cough Yedolf cough

If you get your public education in the deep south, you'll get a lot of lost-cause revisionist history. Everything from "the civil war really had nothing to do with slavery" to "slaves were actually treated very well".

They seem to want to hide segregation.

The quote continues with roughly “the north asked the south if they want to live in an America with slavery where other races are exploited for prosperity, or one where they pretend they don’t”

Philomena Cunk is truly a global treasure.

Don't say that out loud! The British Museum might hear you.

This always gets me. We're told land of freedom and opportunity and all that. It was literally founded on slavery. And women couldn't vote.

Beau of the fifth column says it so well: you're taught American mythology, not American history.

Philomena Cunk was written by Charlie Brooker, who also has written Black Mirror, Dead Set, Death to 2020 and A Touch of Cloth.

Damn, looks like I got to comb through my fucking 5 subscription services again for some titles. Honestly though, thanks for this.

You can also just search Philomena Cunk on YouTube. The Cunk on Britain series is on there as well as a ton of 5min shorts. It's so freaking funny.

Apparently it's called "Cunk on Earth". Had to look it up myself

[–] N00dle 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I love the humor of the show

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago

I love this show. These brilliant jokes always come so unexpectedly for me.

"These days people spend thousands of dollars to visit the sun-kissed islands of the Caribbean. But in the 1700s you could go there for free, if you were black and you didn't want to go there."

I love this woman so much.

The show is very inconsistent.

While some jokes are phenomenal others are just unfunny and straight up cringey.

Still worth a watch as some stuff is genuinely good.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yes, it definitely has its ups and downs. IMO mostly ups.

A lot of comedy/skit shows are like that. We take the good with the bad I guess
