2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack members of the community for any reason.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • These rules are somewhat loosened when the subject is a public figure. Still, do not attack their person or incite harrassment.

Diversity is a huge strength of Linux. We should encourage users to use whatever works for them.

As much as I agree that it's super nice with all these different flavours. It does make it more difficult for beginners to understand the eco system.

If you use Open Source, you have the cool sauce.

There's no hate like Linux on Linux hate.

Jerry Springer meme - user attacked for installing ubuntu on a steam deck

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I don't know man, have you seem how much Star Wars fans hate Star Wars?

    [–] regeya 6 points 2 years ago

Yeah but Rose said a Jedi thing in a goofy way, that makes her the worst character ever and we should send threats to the actor because that's a reasonable response

    [–] BigJim 1 points 2 years ago

    I liked Rise of Skywalker

    No You're breathtaking!

All that matters is that you're on linux, unless you use gnome.

    [–] Chobbes 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Back in 2007 a Linux user wished on a monkey's paw that Linux would be the most popular operating system in regular use, and then Android was unveiled.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

    Should've said "GNU/Linux"

    [–] okamiueru 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Maybe it was only said as a meme, but, I like gnome quite a lot. I find it about 10x less annoying than W10/W11 and 7x less annoying than MacOS. What else should I be taking a look at though?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

    KDE!

Then again, I use Hyprland as my daily, so :/

    [–] marcos 4 points 2 years ago

That reminds me of the meme about the guy putting a crowbar at his bicycle wheel.

I have no problem at all about you using gnome; except if you come to me complaining about gnome. Even worse if you come to me complaining about Linux by reciting the shit gnome does.

    [–] ricdeh 2 points 2 years ago

lol true :P All that matters is that you're on Linux, unless you use anything other than Arch

Awh, us Gnome users always catching strays :(

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What about a Gnome Desktop fork?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

the only ones I know are far enough from it that it would be in bad faith to judge them on that

    [–] heliumlake 0 points 2 years ago

Am I a heathen for running Gnome on Gentoo?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I sure hope you posted this from a distro that I like, if not then there may be consequences.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 years ago (5 children)

I use Mint and I'm not even sorry. Fight me!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

that's cool... on a side note have you heard of our lord and savior Arch Linux? You should use it btw (/s)

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago

You're obviously a basement-dwelling, Mountain Dew swilling neckbeard! I hope your mom burns the tendies again tonight!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

arch is soo old now, nix is the new cool kid in the block

    [–] kplaceholder 5 points 2 years ago

I use Arch btw but got into Linux with Mint and I'm glad I did. Really solid distro!

    [–] JigglySackles 3 points 2 years ago

Mint is a fantastic distro. I had good luck with it.

    [–] jelloeater85 2 points 2 years ago

I used Ubuntu Mate, weird combo I guess?

    [–] BackOnMyBS 2 points 2 years ago

Mint with Cinnamon here. It just works. I maybe google how to troubleshoot something once per week max 👌

It's all good, diversity and shit... until somebody asks "How do I install Kali Linux for daily driving?"

    [–] Auzzeren 9 points 2 years ago

Reminds me of when I was looking up an issue for Kali Linux and saw like 10 different reddit threads, all full of “don’t use Kali Linux unless you know how to use it”. Which was very helpful when I had to use it for my coursework.

Side note: the most downvoted comment contained actual advice that fixed my problem.

    [–] Evrala 2 points 2 years ago

The strangest choice I've seen for a daily driver is I had a friend who used Knoppix as his daily driver. He started using it on a thumb drive when his computer died, so he just used a thumb drive and random borrowed computers for a while, after getting used to it he transfered the install to his new laptop when he got it.

    [–] weirdwallace75 1 points 11 months ago

That's beyond bad taste and into active stupidity.

    [–] UnfortunateShort 8 points 2 years ago

Tell me that your distro sucks without telling me your distro sucks

    /s

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

But it’s not cool unless you know how to install arch (doesn’t mention that there’s literally a script that does it for you)

[–] cool 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

    script

I have seen full fledged installers (with gui and live cd) for arch lol

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 years ago

Finally, a safe place for RBOS.

    [–] zeppo 6 points 2 years ago

I don't need other people to think it. I'm simply feeling cool over here

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

My favorite Linux distro is Android. /Ragebait

    [–] Jnax 3 points 2 years ago

Aaah, unless and as long as I use vannila Ubuntu + GNOME combo.

    [–] tdawg 3 points 2 years ago

Shaming people for using Ubuntu or other “easy” distros is how you prevent people from joining the community long term. We’d be better served by being welcoming and understanding of people

    [–] Magister 2 points 2 years ago

Absolutely, I'm using MX and people I know use Ubuntu or Arch and we all don't care

    [–] Ignisnex 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Weird seeing this today. Just had a vendor say he was impressed that I jump from Arch to Alpine to Ubuntu to Windows throughout the day for work. They're all good stuff. Btw, I use nano, and will now accept the flames of retribution.

    [–] cool 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Are you using alpine for desktop?

    [–] Ignisnex 1 points 2 years ago

Server environment, actually! I run it for my Kubernetes stack.

    [–] ChillPill 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Don't know what you're talking about, nano is great. I use it unironically.

    [–] Ignisnex 2 points 2 years ago

Nano is great lol. I used to get boo'd by the vi users back in the day.
