This is a bad look for Apple: it shows that there's basically no editorial independence at Apple TV, something that has been a well-established feature at for-profit newspapers and television channels for decades. This clearly demonstrates that Apple TV cannot be trusted when it comes to serious news.

Editorial independence a well established feature of for profit media? The fuck you smoking?

[–] [email protected] 39 points 8 months ago (2 children)

I don't need to smoke anything, I simply live in the EU where this is commonplace.

Don't worry, with media independence being an area of concern for the EU, and with the Digital Services Act in the process of being enacted, we'll no doubt soon Brussels-effect your biggest media providers into compliance. The rest will follow soon thereafter.

Holy, even here in europe you can't bite the hand that feeds you.

“According to The Hollywood Reporter, ahead of its decision to end The Problem, Apple approached Stewart directly and expressed its need for the host and his team to be “aligned” with the company’s views on topics discussed. Rather than falling in line when Apple threatened to cancel the show, Stewart reportedly decided to walk.”

The least surprising thing possible to any Jon Stewart fan.

I can’t wait to see him on the late night shows.

One of the few people that can stand up to Apple, take an L, and still be more than okay in career and spirit.

[–] Nogami 12 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I can’t imagine any manager who’s dense enough not to know what Stewart’s reaction would be to that sort of line, and whoever suggested a meeting about it should be ashamed.

The day he runs for president (and wins) will be a day that people full of bullshit will remember as the beginning of the end…

This is disappointing of Apple. You hire someone like Jon Stewart and you have to expect him to do hard hitting journalism! Apple is one of the biggest companies in the whole world, they can afford to support their journalists. I’m sure HBO has gone to bat for John Oliver for worse.

[–] riodoro1 25 points 8 months ago

They have their mouths full of winnie the pooh’s cock, and at this point they dont care about anything else.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they already monitor your imessages and if they are critical of china they snitch to the local confucius institute.

[–] [email protected] 46 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I am very neutral on this in general. Honestly, Stewart does not need Apple at this point pretty much at all.

But man, to have been a fly on the wall in that meeting. I've seen Stewart's "disappointed in you and not particularly worried about it" face and it's weapons grade old dad disappointment. There were definitely sweaty outlines on many of those chairs by the end of it.

Stewart does not need Apple at this point pretty much at all.

Did he ever tho?

It's Jon Stewart. He can start a YouTube show and hit millions of subscribers within a week.

[–] ilikekeyboards 5 points 8 months ago (2 children)

And then get banned from YouTube because he's not aligning with the company

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago

If Russel Brand can be on Youtube without getting banned for his content, I think Jon would be fine.

[–] Nogami 1 points 8 months ago

Stewart could single-handedly start “JonTube” and it would be a success with no content but his own.

I could only dream of a news network with Jon at the helm. Fuck it would be glorious.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago

He needs a platform for his show. He probably wouldn't care if it was on OAN if he was able to do his own thing.

He's not going to do Youtube. If you're an actual celebrity, that's career suicide.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Not YouTube: too controversial. But I wouldn't put it past him to start his own federated service.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Good on him for sticking to his ideals. I don’t always see eye to eye with Stewart, but he’s smart, principled, and articulate. Very interesting to hear how Apple is so married to China and AI. I wonder how much we don’t hear because companies and media are afraid of angering the CCP. Thankfully Biden is continuing Trump’s policies of decoupling from China. We can’t do business with genocidal dictatorships and expect to walk away unscathed.

We can’t do business with genocidal dictatorships and expect to walk away unscathed.

Yeah, we learned not to do business with genocidal dictatorships after ww2... Except all those dictatorships that we funded to kill leftists.

But then we learned not to do business with genocidal dictatorships after the cold war... Except all those dictatorships that we funded to buy oil.

But this time I'm sure we definitely learned not to do business with genocidal dictatorships even when they align with our policy goals.

It's almost like corporate profits are more important than the message.

[–] diffusive 14 points 8 months ago

Thank god it was cancelled… people would have discovered that china uses ai for controlling their citizens (and possibly others). Something that is totally not known to anyone

[–] [email protected] 14 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Canceling Apple TV over this, knew they were spineless, but this is pathetic since it’s one of the few shows I watch on it. Growing really tired of all these service subscriptions as it is.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 8 months ago

I’ll do you one better - I’m going to pirate every apple show I watch just do they don’t get my money.

I refer to this tactic by its official name: “How I watch everything already.” 🏴‍☠️

[–] [email protected] 14 points 8 months ago

I appreciate that this is a forum for Apple enthusiasts, but as someone who is not particularly enthusiastic about any big tech company but loves Jon Stewart, I consider this good news. Hopefully he'll keep it going somewhere else.

[–] TheDannysaur 13 points 8 months ago (1 children)

First episode on the new network - The Problem With Apple

[–] LifeOfChance 4 points 8 months ago

You know he's gonna talk about it soon

[–] Desistance 12 points 8 months ago

I'm sure he can move his show to another service without these Apple hangups.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Apple also makes original content for Apple News+, they have some podcasts. I wonder if their original work there is subject to the same policy. If so, that really undermines their credibility as a news source.

"John, you're fucking with our yuans."

[–] [email protected] 9 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Honestly, I don't get why he didn't just go on YouTube full episodes instead of apple. I would love to watch his show, but I don't want to pay apple a subscription.

[–] glimse 21 points 8 months ago (15 children)

Because Google didn't offer him a contract

Just cancelled Apple TV+ 🙂

already in the news: Apple is dumping China as fast as they can without majorly impacting their products. Manufacturing switching to other countries already.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Damn. I would really like to see his commentary on everything going on now.
