Is Newsom angling for VP, or is he hoping Biden drops out of the race or something?

I think he's prepping for 2028. I still don't see the point here though.

I think this sends a few messages. It's not that dems are afraid to debate DeSantis, but it is beneath even the vice president to bother. Meanwhile, it keeps DeSantis alive longer, which creates turmoil in the GOP as allegiances are divided. And Gavin wants to raise his own profile so that people know who he is and he can skip the introductions should Harris need to pick a VP in the near future.

The only thing Newsom could do wrong is be unprepared for the debate.

The only thing Newsom could do wrong is be unprepared for the debate.

Would be an impressive flop for him, given how well he managed Hannity in their last 1:1. He came very prepared to that, I'd expect nothing less for this "debate"

Oh yeah, I think it's going to be a win, but then again DeSantis could shit his pants on tv and claim he won the debate, and his supporters would believe it.

[–] ohlaph 7 points 1 year ago

They would probably shit their pants* in support.

*more.

He has an alarming number of supporters. Florida is crazy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I know. He's got more support than trump in some states, it seems. However, his campaign is floundering and he's losing ground not making it. He's not a real candidate any more. If he has charisma and ideas, perhaps it could turn around as people learn who he is. He has the opposite effect.

I think he's hoping to stay in it long enough for Trump to be forced out by legal problems. But I don't think Trump supporters will flock to DeSantis, I think they will dissipate across all the other turds still floating in the bowl, or they will just stay home.

He’ll finish the terms in California by 2028, so prepping for that I would assume so dems have SOMEONE who is ANYONE. As I’m sick of the “omg Biden is the ONLY NAME AT ALL so it HAS TO BE HIM.”

[–] Hazdaz 2 points 1 year ago

He is waiting 4 years. The problem is that CA already has a ton of problems that he should be back home and solving, and instead he's wasting his time and everyone else's by doing these stupid debates. If he can solve the many problems that CA has in 4 years, he's a shoo-in to win the Democratic nomination in 2028.

Maybe providing an alternative candidate to pivot away from Biden if he continues polling so poorly against Trump?

Also, DeSantis is polling so far behind Trump currently, why should Biden go work ‘em over? Send out Newsom to handle the light work.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

DeSantis could be seen as an alternative candidate if say, Trump ends up in prison, or has a health problem, and they decide not to run him this time. Seems unlikely Trump would ever agree to that, though.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Agreed. I can’t see the GOP pivoting away from Trump voluntarily nor Trump voluntarily agreeing to be off ballot.

It’s funny, I specifically remember Biden saying he was going to be a 1-term president and that he wouldn’t run for a second term, handing off to a younger person to take up the proverbial torch. I think it was in relation to debate questions about his age.

Sad to see that isn’t panning out.

[–] dezmd 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

When the hell did Biden say that?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I thought it was during one of the debates in the run up to the 2020 election. But I can’t find evidence that backs my recollection. There was an article from back then that discusses and maybe this is what I read and somehow conflated into words coming out of Bidens mouth.

I specifically remember Biden saying

Scary how easily misinformation and negative sentiment is spread by confidence in a memory of something that didn't happen.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I know right. Memory is weird.

[–] Etterra 14 points 1 year ago

Ratings. The point is ratings.

Should be a good debate.
