Communists? Nah, not a problem. I mean I'm a Star Trek fan, and while it's not played up that much the Federation is a post-scarcity socialist-adjacent society. I'm all for everyone having their basic needs met without condition or obligation, and money being obsolete.

Tankies though can fuck right off. North Korea is not a bastion of democracy. China is not more free than the US. This is not a comparison even worth entertaining.

[–] Astroturfed 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Exactly, the tankies make me not want to talk about/positively about communist theory. I've always aligned more with socialist ideas but wasn't opposed to the idea of communism. The tankies make me just cringe when someone brings up communism now. It's like all the edgelords who have no real world experiences have gather together under the tanky flag.

[–] chuckleslord 5 points 1 year ago

Now that's patently unfair. Half of them became full conservative fascists instead.

[–] Custoslibera 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Star Trek is fully automatic gay space communism.

It’s not socialist adjacent.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Counterpoint: Riker.

Look, I know the Federation doesn't have money, but they probably brought it back just to charge Riker for all the extra cleanup required every time he visited the holodeck.

[–] c0mbatbag3l 2 points 1 year ago

Quark's Holosuites were never clean again after Riker came aboard DS9.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I don't think anyone has a problem with post scarcity utopian idealism, we just aren't at the post scarcity part yet

[–] [email protected] 83 points 1 year ago (9 children)

Aye I wish belived that capitalism created a fair society. Seems more comfy.

In my experience, the point of leftism is to bring more power to the average citizen. What about that do you disagree with?

[–] [email protected] 63 points 1 year ago

The meme doesn't say "leftism".

[–] 6xpipe_ 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Communism =/= leftism. It's an extreme form of socialism.

My biggest problem isn't even the communist ideals. Have your ideas, that's fine. I don't care.

My problem is the amount of people coming into post comments attacking American Imperialism® on posts that aren't even related to communist ideals or, sometimes, that don't even mention America. It gets tiring reading how much America sucks when that's not even the point of the post.

[–] Ragdoll_X 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Communism is leftist, and often conservatives and some liberals will call anything left of center "communist" so it's well within reason for the OC to be wary of your rhetoric.

Also disliking imperalism isn't only a communist thing, and I have to wonder what kinds of posts you're looking at that people bring up American imperialism if it's not relevant. I'm subscribed to a lot of political communities on Lemmy and don't see the topic of imperialism being brought up that often.

[–] Eldritch 3 points 1 year ago

There are many types of communism. Most left leaning ideologies can be described in terms of communism. As Westerners, the further you live from Eastern Europe the more miseducated we tend to be about the subject.

I don't mind seeing communist content, it's better than the shit that I was seeing on Reddit's front page before I left it. At least communists aren't spewing hatred against people based on their skin colour, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other things that people can't control.

Although the centrists and leftists still hate each other, Lemmy is just a nicer place in general due to the lack of far-right horse shit.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Idk, getting told I should get hit by a truck and nuked into dust because of the country I happened to be born in is kinda sus.

[–] SpaceNoodle 3 points 1 year ago

Except for the tankies, who are all for authoritarian regimes under a false label of "communism."

[–] [email protected] 49 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I dont have a problem with commies bc they are people that want good but we just disagree on how it should be achieved. Tankies on the other hand are basically nazis but they support stalin and not hitler.

Socies are cool but tankies are absolutely not

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Lemmy would be great if people would just stop whinging all the time and just blocked communities they didn't like. Jesus.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago

Once instance based blocking is made available to users this will be a non issue

Lemmy is great because of the commies

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 year ago (1 children)

At least it's not Nazis, although tankies are every bit as bad.

[–] Ragdoll_X 7 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Nazis

Tankies

They're the same picture.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Lol, yeah but knowing the difference is important.

I hear more complaining about commies/tankies than I actually see posts from them

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

You ought to consider yourself lucky.

[–] febra 12 points 1 year ago

I'm a socialist. This is just some more red scare bullshit. Just because I'm socialist doesn't mean I'm a tankie licking Russia's and China's boots. I'm an EU citizen, full on EU supporter, and at the same time I can be a socialist.

[–] Zehzin 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

> Joins federated network

> Complains that it's full of people who don't like hierarchy

Might as well complain about the open source software people while you're at it

[–] Custoslibera 2 points 1 year ago

It’s pretty wild people come to Lemmy and complain about this.

I’m grateful Lemmy is filled with commies (not the tankie ones but meh).

Neolibs infect everywhere else.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (3 children)

this is how I feel about the liberals to be honest, but that's the beauty of lemmy: we can have our instance to talk about communism, and you can have your instance to talk about how much you hate communism.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lol. 90% of hexbear posts are about liberals.

Libs live rent free in your heads, don't lie to us 😏

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

"I know we're the dominant group in everyday society, and most regular people agree with us, which means most people you must interact with on the daily are probably liberal, but we live rent free in your head you see, and it totally doesn't have anything to do with us shoving our bullshit down your throats every day in your daily life. It's because you're pathetic!"

Sure, Jan. Sure.

The problem isn't communism per se, but communism forcibly imposed.

More precisely, the problem is that communism is the superior system to the degree that it's egalitarian - that it eliminates the ruling class and instead treats all citizens equally - and the forcible imposition of communism immediately destroys that, since it presumes that those carrying out the forcible imposition rightfully possess the authority to do so, and thereby simply establishes them as a new ruling class.

Communism should be the goal, but in order to actually fulfill its potential, it MUST be voluntarily adopted by the people rather than forcibly imposed.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This but also humans are inherently greedy, easy to corrupt, and prone to power hungry authoritarianism, so no system we create to govern ourselves has ever, or will ever, be fair or just.

[–] MrVilliam 4 points 1 year ago

I'm not sure how to implement it, but I'd like to see a qualified lottery-based election in which power is briefly thrust upon competent citizens selected at random. Because you're 100% right that positions of power attract greed and corruption. I think that the best people to put in power are the people who understand the responsibility to the point that they don't want it, and if they're only in power for a very brief time then it shouldn't be very corrupting or special.

Imagine jury duty but for political office, complete with a limited voir dire function to weed out people who are grossly unfit. That's the closest to fair and just that I can think of. It's just hard to get there without already having somebody in charge who doesn't really want to be in charge lol.

[–] Sanctus 6 points 1 year ago

I think Lemmy exists solely because of communists. Like one literally scripted it. So....

[–] Potatos_are_not_friends 5 points 1 year ago

64% upvoted.

Ha, looks like OP definitely hit a nerve.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I like commie porn tho

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

You might want to move instances. .ml is federated with hexbear, which has a lot of really annoying authoritarian communists. (Tankies) .world and many others are defederated with them, so you could block the subs and users, or move to a different instance.

[–] Ensign_Crab 2 points 1 year ago

I've seen a lot of users who are still salty about the fall of Berlin whining about communists.

Haven't seen a lot of communists.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Psst, you are free to gtfo.
