Hard agree on Breaking Bad. It fits together like a puzzle. It gets better the longer you watch. The climactic episodes are some of the best TV ever made.

IMDB rates Bojack Horseman as number 1 show, yet it hasn’t made this list.

what platform is the very right hand side column?

[–] Kolrami 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

IMDb votes (not to be confused with the other IMDb rating column)

I think it's the amount of votes each show has. So having a high rank just means a lot of people had an opinion whether good or bad.

I think the following link should have the same results. https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=tv_series&sort=num_votes%2Cdesc

Battlestar Galactica is not better than Deadwood. I will die on this hill.

Old guy here - no M.A.S.H. ? Happy Days?

[–] chiliedogg 3 points 1 day ago

Most of this is fairly recent, and I think it's all available to stream pretty easily.

[–] Kben@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

I think Curb your enthusiasm should be somewhere on that list,no other show has had me laughing so hard my stomach hurts.

[–] CidVicious@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago

Just a lot of recency bias here.

It's one of my personal favorites, but I am still a bit surprised to see House so high on the list.

Imo one notable absence from this list is "The good place", which imo is among the all time greats, managing to stay consistently good from start to finish.

Also I actually haven't seen the other true detective seasons, but heard they aren't even close to as good as the first one. So i assume the rating is heavily carried by it?

[–] ech@lemm.ee 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Good Place is so forking good.

[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

I think the show is great like generally the characters and the sitcom plot and I love most things Micheal Schur makes.

But man as someone who’se actually studied Moral Philosophy, the show is really tough to watch because it oversimplifies and misinterprets so much and Chidi is just not a believable character if you know what you’re talking about. It feels more like pop-culture buzzfeed philosophy quiz sprinkled with stereoptypes than actual ethics.

True Detective S2 was not good. S3 was ok and S4 was meh.

[–] golli@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

That description certainly doesn't sound right, when talking about putting it up with the greatest series of all time.

[–] NOT_RICK 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The only good part of season two is Colin Farrell beating up that kid’s dad.

I enjoyed House, but I would never call it a good show. Enjoyable, sure.

[–] golli@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'd call an enjoyable show good, but that is just semantics. However regardless I would call house a good show, even if I acknowledge that I am a bit biased.

It does have it's flaws, which is why I wouldn't put it up for debate as objectively one of the best shows of all time (just subjectively rank it high).

The one case per episode format of course doesn't quite lend itself to high cinema. And it also doesn't have the realism as something like the pitt, to take a recent example. Plus I guess final seasons weren't quite as strong with a weaker team (that admittedly also didnt have the time for us to get to know them as well) and Lisa Edelstein didn't return for the final season due to failed salary negotiations.

But imo the series has a lot of strong points: Hugh Laurie as House did an outstanding job, and imo some of the others such as Robert Sean Leonard as Wilson as well. Despite the episodic format it had some imo good character arcs. And episodes like "House's head"/"Wilson's heart", "three stories", "three stories" or "one day, one room" are outstanding cinema that certainly put it in the "good show" category.

How in the fuck is the x files not on it. You're going to look me in the face and say lost is better than the x files.

"Sorry, I just love cliffhangers that have no purpose other than to add commercial breaks and then not actually pay off."

You're going to tell me friends, the show that wrote the book for basic ass misunderstanding sitcoms is better than the x files.

I better just have missed it, or this world really is fucked.

Also what about ER? And SVU? Just the Robin Williams episode alone should be at like #14.

And wasn't MASH the most watched show ever at one point?

At least Chernobyl is right where it belongs.

[–] SadSadSatellite@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

[–] SinningStromgald 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Am I the only one convinced a more Arya-centric GoT would have done better?

The whole series should have been Aryan and the hound riffing on each other

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

No way that Mindhunter should be on the list at all. I liked it for a while, but it just got worse over time and then was canceled.

And Dark shouldn't be removed from the list; it should be higher on the list.

Your 18 and 20 overlap.

Agreed on Raised by Wolves. Such a strong start.

Mindhunter should be higher just for it's stellar use of Gary numan

[–] SillySausage@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Needs more Scrubs and Malcolm in the Middle.

Ah shit I forgot about those. Well swap the squirrels at grandmas with Malcolm, and CSI Miami with scrubs.

Also metalocalypse probably should be separated from the good adult swim shows.

[–] MerrySkeptic@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Stranger Things should not be that high

[–] jacksilver 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Same with Game of Thrones. For a plot driven show, the inability to stick the landing is a huge negative for me. Same reason why Lost is such a terrible show.

[–] easily3667@lemmus.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Game of thrones and lost are terrible for.wildly different reasons tho.

[–] jacksilver 1 points 1 day ago

I don't know there are more similarities than I initially thought:

  • a lot of mystery of the others / whitewalkers
  • a lot of politics around leadership and vying factions
  • some mystical element around saving the world
  • a complete flop on wrapping up the ending in a meaningful way

I mean it's been forever since I watched Lost, so my recollection may be off, but they're not a dissimilar as you'd think.

[–] finalaccountforreal@lemm.ee 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Wire, Dark and Twin Peaks should be much higher.

[–] bamboo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Wire is in the top 10 though?

[–] finalaccountforreal@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Should be higher, still 😉

[–] Valmond 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Where is Red Dwarf and Black Adder? Or is these just American series?

[–] SillySausage@lemmynsfw.com 6 points 1 day ago

Fawlty Towers? Monty Python's Flying Circus? Firefly? Brooklyn 99? Farscape?

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago

Peep Show is in there so it's not just U.S. based. Though the ratings sites used probably have a high proportion of American voters.

Nice to see Fleabag on there.

[–] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Where stargate

[–] ivanafterall 4 points 1 day ago

Deadwood at #37 immediately invalidates all underlying data.

No one likes the last season
