The buyer’s remorse is playing out at a volatile moment for Tesla, as stocks dropped by double digits in the last week, wiping out most of a post-election surge for Mr. Musk’s company. A recent report showed plummeting sales in Europe, and the company faces increased competition from other E.V. makers eating away at its market share. Recent protests outside Tesla showrooms in the United States and some notable cases of vehicle owners being harassed have also made headlines.

Ms. Trebb, 54, a family therapist and a Democrat, said she had decided to trade in her Tesla for a gas-powered Mercedes, accepting $32,000 of the Tesla’s original $55,880 value, despite having only 10,000 miles on it. Her decision, she said, was cemented during a recent trip to the supermarket.

“Two weeks ago, I was called a Nazi,” she said, “in the parking lot at Kroger,” adding an expletive. “I came home and told my husband, ‘That’s it. I’m done.’”

A number of defectors from the Tesla brand said that a deal-breaker was when Mr. Musk extended his arm diagonally upward, palm facing down while speaking at an inauguration event for Mr. Trump, a gesture that resembled a salute used in Nazi Germany and fascist Italy.

“I’m sort of embarrassed to be seen in that car now,” said Ms. Trebb, who got a bumper sticker that said, “I bought this before Elon went crazy,” one that has gained popularity.

I feel sorry for the Tesla employees. It's not their fault that their company is being owned by a right-wing moron.

i believed musk has largely abandoned teslas after he got that 50bn package from them, he doesnt care anymore.

Tesla is headed for a complete collapse this year. Watch for it.

That’s a lot of words for “did a nazi salute,” NYT. I’m thinking there’s a newspaper needs scalpin’.

NYTimes is the quintessential epitome of the sort of middling liberal apologetics that funnel a society toward fascism. They aren't friends, they're a mouthpiece for money.

I’m going to get downvoted for this, but I understand where they’re coming from on this. They can’t come out and call it that because to do so would risk a lawsuit that could effectively kill the newspaper. Seriously, Musk could purchase it, shutter it, and recoup his losses in no-bid contracts next week. Instead, he could sue them for defamation. He would likely win, or at least get a large settlement. That would ripple through the paper in the form of reduced coverage and possibly reduced staff.

Read what they wrote again. There’s a reason they described what he did so precisely. They know what they’re saying, and so do we. They have to be careful about how they say it, though.

[–] blady_blah 3 points 5 hours ago

They say he did what "appeared to be a nazi salute"... or "he did what critics say was a nazi salute". Both of those are journalisticly accurate and a better description of what happened.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 17 hours ago

not exactly NYT has been shilling for the right for a number of years, because its owned by a right ringer.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

He's gonna sue them anyway. Either have a backbone or exit the paper business

[–] d00phy 1 points 12 hours ago

The lawsuit is a lot cheaper for the times of Musk’s suit doesn’t have merit, though. If the outright called it what it definitely appeared to be, they’re exposed to that lawsuit and would likely have to pony up, at least in the form of a hefty settlement.

[–] krashmo 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

If they're worried about billionaires having too much power and trying to shut them down then perhaps the NYT should have done more to prevent that situation from being possible. I recall many instances in the past decade where they went out of their way to provide cover for both billionaires and fascists. You reap what you sow.

the 2016 and 2020 coverage of Bernie Sanders and their pushing of centrist anti-progressive agendas in the editorials was enough for me to unsubscribe forever. after what they've done in recent years, there's no way I'll ever trust them to represent working class interests.

here's an example just a couple weeks ago of them laundering Republican party talking points into man on the street style "people are saying" interviews about how 'aktually I'm black and I'm glad DEI is being ended.' receipts showing stealth edits made to cover their tracks in the linked article.

[–] Tedesche 2 points 20 hours ago

Was going to make this exact point. You’re spot on. Downvoters are simply in denial about the reality of slander laws.

I know my 4 dollars a month is nothing to them, but at least you can rest comfortably tonight knowing that by bringing this sentence to my attention you just lost them a sub lol

[–] [email protected] 2 points 12 hours ago

Excellent. I also recently stopped my subscription.

you mean you held a rodent-like object in your hand palm down and applied pressure on its button to activate a trigger what appears to cancel your NYT subscription?

[–] [email protected] 41 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Hold up. She was tired of the Nazi association with a Tesla, so she traded in for a Mercedes?

[–] froh42 6 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Musk is not a Nazi, because the Nazis built great cars.

[–] Litebit 3 points 5 hours ago

Musk is a neo-nazi.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 22 hours ago

Neo-nazi association. Mercedes-Benz has been around since 1926, and still is around. Can't say that for the Nazis.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

He was an asshole before he ever sold his first car. The first Tesla was launched into space as a fuck you to his partner.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

If you're referring to the roadster, that was definitely not the first Tesla.

But yes, complete asshole and has always been.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I kinda feel bad for people who thought they were doing something good for the planet, but ended up supporting a Nazi.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

Over 3 years of driving my swasticar, I've spent just $800 on electricity to go over 40,000 miles.

Other than replacing the tires once, no other maintenance.

I'm working on terminating my financing without too much loss, and will likely go back to driving a $30/week gas car for awhile until I can figure something out.

It honestly kinda sucks, but fuck Musk.

[–] lemming741 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

~$0.07/kWh? Where's that? Is that an overnight rate where they rape you in the daylight and cuddle you when the sun goes down? My advertised rate is $0.067/kWh but there are tariffs and surcharges that bring the difference in a 1300 kWh bill and a 1301 kWh bill to $0.16

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Actually averages $0.058/kWh, rural-ish Oregon, local energy company. I moved here from a place closer to Portland that was ~$0.145/kWh (probably more now).

About half a mile in a couple directions from me the rates go WAYYYYY up. So I'm somewhat lucky. If it ever comes to that though, I'm hoping I can transition to solar.

[–] lemming741 2 points 5 hours ago

That's half the off-peak rate from Pacific Power.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Are there any sort of subscriptions that make you keep paying Musk for the car? I think he's already been paid for the purchase, might as well keep the car? Unless you just don't want to be seen in it of course.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I don't like being associated with it. Also in my area people are spray painting and kicking dents and breaking windows of Tesla's...which costs me repair money. I'd prefer to avoid that.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 17 hours ago

All extremely valid concerns. Sucks, I do like what Tesla stood for until a few years ago. I've always hated that they normalised tablets in place of physical controls though.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (2 children)

Why wouldn't you just buy an EV from a different brand? All the benefits you describe are of an EV, not a Tesla

[–] [email protected] 5 points 19 hours ago (2 children)
  1. I'm stuck in a lease that's underwater unless I at least wait until like 60-90 days until turn in
  2. Technically, on paper, I'm currently not being paid, which makes any sort of financing impossible. This is an unfortunate gap for at least another 3 months.
  3. I am currently looking at Lucid or Rivian.

fuck you Elon and fuck your over hyped car company.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sell them off for cheap. Bottom out the market. Buy a Ford Mustang Mach-E. Have fun.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart 16 points 1 day ago (3 children)

It pisses me off they decided to call that the mustang.

They could have made it the escape and did a modern electric mustang styled like the 1967 fastback.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 hours ago

I got downvoted to hell in an ev page for pointing this out when the mach e first came out.

[–] halcyoncmdr 11 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

The Mach-E has absolutely no Mustang DNA in it despite what they want to try to brand. All it does is shit on the Mustang name. I can recognize this and I don't even like Ford or Mustang. I can't imagine how actual fans haven't revolted.

Also, why can't manufacturers just accept that some people want the same vehicles available but with EV powertrains? Not every EV needs to be a unique model. Just like they eventually figured out with hybrids, you can just swap the power train and they'll sell.

You could just remove tesla branding. It's too late, the money already went to Musk long ago.

[–] AlternatePersonMan 27 points 1 day ago

By selling the car she is helping to lower the value of the brand.

[–] ms_lane 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You're still left with a car without real turn signals that has mechanical problems reminiscent of late 80s Korean cars.
