It didn't start with the media, it started with the crypto libertarians and tech bros. I might be misremembering but I think the news media got on their knees in the mid 2010s.
Well, that and the stupid cameo in iron man. But in general when people say media these days they mean the fourth estate not paramount pictures
How funny would it be if they did a George Lucas and just edited the audio to remove Musks name.

He didn't have to pay for that back then. He was worshipped by the rich pseudo progressive people, meaning modern Star Trek producers and writers.
He even was in the second Iron Man, because back then he was viewed as a real life Tony Stark. That was before he openly showed what a fucking bigot he was
He was in there because Marvel used locations from his companies for filming, and that was (at least part of) his payment.
Back when he had a PR team.

and this is the exact reason why trek shouldn't use real life (living) people in its lore.
one week they're the messiah, the next they're a pariah.
It's from 2017, right? It was very clear Musk was an idiot back then too.
Maybe not as comically evil as he is now, but still.
Everyone acts like we collectively only realized he was an idiot like 2 years ago. I remember when I first heard about him in college around 2016 I didn't like him even then. His ego was clearly apparent and his "progressive persona" was obviously a persona.
I remember back in 2014-2015, working the night shift and watching a video about Elon, which gushed about him being an entrepeneur, and found it really strange to make all the claims about him being a fantastic person just because he ran a business.
This was peak hyperloop hype, which was also very odd to me, as I remember reading a pop-sci magazine a decade earlier about Swiss metro, which was the same idiotic concept, but with less cool graphics...
The cave rescue thing was 2018 and it's often brought up as the turning point in people's perception of musk, so fair enough I guess?
as long as the real people actually invented a device and that's all that's mentioned I'm fine with it, but praising real people is just a bad idea.
Stamets is named after Paul Stamet, who's one part legit mycologist researcher, one part mushroom cure-all, woo peddler. He at least has the sense to compartmentalize his books. "The Mushroom Cultivator" remains the goto, soup-to-nuts book on cultivating mushrooms.

I just watched this series in the last year and I remember scoffing when I heard that, lol I had no idea what was coming.
Also being kinda new to Star Trek, is there a joke about Frakes? My wife and I always joke that when an episode makes no fucking sense, it was directed by JFrakes, and I wonder if its something like a joke among trek fans
What a weird take. He directed first contact. The drum head. The search, and past tense. All great.

I haven't seen TNG or First Contact since it was on the air. I remember FC being good, and the Frakes episodes of ds9 are good. We were watching Disco, and in that case, his episodes are just bizarre.
Usually the more complex and deep episodes are Frakes. When you see his name as director, you know you're in for a great ride. It's probably partly because he's ST royalty so he can push the envelope and doesn't need to play it safe for his career.
His episodes make no sense at all in Disco, which is saying something for a show that makes no sense at all, but his ds9 EPs are pretty good.
He tends to pick up more oddball or funny episodes. In this case, he actually didn't direct that episode. Felt fitting and needed something to tie things up on a more positive slant.
It's pretty risky to name drop a living person, and they did it just to seem a bit more modern.
