Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday U.S. President Donald Trump will hold off on levying tariffs on Canada for at least 30 days after Canada made a series of commitments to improve security along the border.

The country can let out a collective sigh of relief β€” at least for now.

To get Trump to shelve his punishing tariffs, Trudeau said Canada is reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel and stepping up its co-ordination with American officials to stop the flow of fentanyl.

Still not going to set foot or spend a penny in that fascist shit-stain of a failed country. Canada needs to take this as a wake up call, the USA cannot be trusted. Ever, For anything. And Canada needs to pull its head out of the US's ass when it comes to foreign policy as well.

Agreed. If someone raises a hand to you, doesn't matter if they strike or not, the damage is done. America proved they are untrustworthy. Fuck em.

At least, their goverment. I know there are still goid people 'down there' but first they need to give fascists the boot. then we can talk about rebuilding trust.

Yea, I don't blame Americans at large. I believe most of them don't want this either.

I fucking want out of here. I did my part to vote, to get out the message and it was all yelling at a brick wall.

It’s a shame because your feelings are right, and I believe it’s exactly what conservative American politicians want everyone to think.

I don’t know what the long game of the US ruling class is, but I do believe it’s for the US to be isolated from its neighbors and (former) allies.

I've canceled a two-week road trip though the United States next fall. I would have spent a few thousand on food, accommodations, and gas during my trip. Not anymore!

Reputational damage is done, I don't mind if y'all go visit but my money will stay out of the USA for the time being, if I can help it.

Trump got a 30 day pause of anthem booing (maybe, we'll see).

Fuck it, I'm still avoiding US products for this BS. Sorry to those it will hurt, but there need to be consequences.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

As an American, please do. Some of these fucking idiots need it to hurt for once to get it through their heads.

Shit or get off the pot Donald.

I'm not going to get bothered waiting for him to go "oh just 30 more days, but now I want this" for 4 more years.

To me, it's already dead. You don't put a gun to a friends head, say "give me your wallet, you know what, maybe I'll kill you anyway, I've always wanted you dead, but here's 30 days" then go back.

You don't treat friends this way. We can't depend on America in any capacity anymore.

Canadians stood up to the bully and the bully turned tail and ran home crying to mommy.

I feel like Trump is grandstanding.

He shot his mouth off, Canada did some stuff (mostly in the fall fiscal update), he looked tough for his base, but relented at the 11th hour.

That last minute save means Trump doesn't have to deal with the sustained economic impact of tariffs. He got to stir the pot and see how much he can get away with.

Coincidentally, Mexico got the exact same deal. We're gonna go through the same song and dance next month.

But it's a good wakeup call for US allies: it's time to start looking for other markets and building trade deals with less volatile partners.

We caved, and now that orange asshole is pushing for access to our banks.

Motherfucker.

Until this point, Trump has framed the threatened tariffs as a way to hit back at Canada for the ongoing trade deficit and supposed inaction on drugs and migrants crossing the northern border into the U.S. β€” his stated concerns about banking fairness are a new development.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

He basically just got "solutions" (read: cheap theatre) to two completely imaginary problems. The banking thing is nonsense that he made up and US banks don't even want.

Trump caved, Trump lost. It was pretty apparent he was caving earlier today when the White House starting calling this whole thing a misunderstanding -- and when Mexico agreed to do something they've already been doing for two years so Trump could spin it as a win.
