Maybe the rising sea levels will put out the fires... :(

'90s were afraid of terrorists too. There were a few big bombings and even plane hijackings that occurred before 9-11.

[–] IndustryStandard 1 points 11 minutes ago

Yeah the terrorists invaded and bombed a lot of countries to steal their oil.

[–] Xaphanos 1 points 3 hours ago

...and satanic cults!

[–] [email protected] 32 points 8 hours ago (3 children)

In the early 90s Rodney King was beaten and there were massive riots in LA. Then there was Waco and the Branch Davidians.

There was also the first Iraq war, the first WTC bombing, the Oklahoma City bombing, the Olympics bombing, and ongoing IRA bombings.

There was the ongoing terror of AIDS, plus mad cow disease in the UK.

Overseas, there was the Rwandan genocide, the Yugoslav wars, the Somalian civil war,

Finally there was the Jonesboro and Columbine school shootings to cap off the decade.

So, genocides, bombings, terrifying diseases and school shootings. Not quite as peaceful as advertised.

Since this comic is about societal fears, there was also the Satanic Panic

[–] blazeknave 4 points 2 hours ago

My mom took 5m to convince the DND hype from yesteryear was bullshit.

[–] Diplomjodler3 5 points 5 hours ago

The world was becoming more peaceful and more democratic. Fewer people went hungry. Many countries made the jump from poor to middle income. All in all, the world was a better place than it is today, but the most important thing was the optimism that things could actually get better. But then people in the US had enough of being reasonable and voted for Dubya.

Tbf as a kid during the 90s I was worried about acid rain and the ozone hole.

[–] Diplomjodler3 5 points 5 hours ago

These problems were solved or at least alleviated by global scale environmental action. The horrendously dirty heavy industry of the Eastern block collapsing did help, of course. There were no large scale disinformation campaigns trying to convince people that sulphur dioxide is good for you.

I liked the 90s. Boring was nice, I miss boring.

[–] Rooty 27 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

As someone from the Balkans, I don't miss the 90's.

[–] TheBat 10 points 12 hours ago

You Balkans sure are contentious people

[–] [email protected] 33 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Plus grunge and an excellent decade for metal and, to a lesser degree, rock. One of the worst for pop music, though 🤷

The less said about 90s fashion the better, though 😄

90s low rise jeans, pockets or not with hip bones on display is what made me know I was straight. Exposed midriffs and back dimples were all the rave there for a good bit.

Edit: I think low rise denim skirts were big around that time as well, I have no complaints about late 90s fashion

[–] [email protected] 8 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

And RAVES!

Though the mid-00s to the mid-2010s had bette music (other than most dubstep, sorry dubstep-lovers)

[–] [email protected] 7 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Agree COMPLETELY on dubstep, but with a few exceptions like System of a Down and Korn, 00s and 2010s music was not anywhere near as good as 90s jams.

If I never hear some lame white rapper with mountains of unearned confidence and delusions of profundity in a metal song again, it'll be too soon 😄

[–] [email protected] 6 points 16 hours ago

Opeth was my #1 both in the 90s and 00s! System of a Down was stellar.

I was a metalhead and hated rap in the 00s, but now that I’m old, I recognize that the 00s had some INCREDIBLE rappers… UGK the GOAT (rest in peace, young Pimp C…), clipse, Lil Wayne (the pun king, so many puns), Jedi Mind Tricks.

Not to mention the anticon collective, doseone is also extremely GOAT (I urge anyone reading this to check out “Less is Orchestra” with doseone and the late great Alias. It’s one of my favorite albums of all time!) 13&God, Subtle, Why?… Some of my favorite music came out in the 00s.

(Sorry for the rant hahaha)

.... or just a peaceful planet without humans

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 hours ago

I too see the most sustainable future for humanity in their little ~~cities~~ artifical ecosystems, be it on earth or in space, leaving the rest of the world alone.

Both can be true! But someone will have to tell those moose that they're in Oslo.

[–] rockSlayer 8 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I wish to live among the moose and tell them. Then I can find the bastard that bit my sister

[–] Dr_Fetus_Jackson 5 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Nø realli!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 18 hours ago

Hah. Like we're letting the trees live

[–] [email protected] 17 points 15 hours ago

Is it bad that they've been slowly slipping for metaphorical to physical?

[–] sumguyonline 7 points 12 hours ago

Rage. Rage! Against the dying of the light. Let us not die with a whimper or a bang.

[–] shalafi 9 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

90s Americans: This Clinton Democrat is some bullshit. Time for a Republican.

Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'

[–] youCanCallMeDragon 1 points 1 hour ago

I hate when the onion isn’t joking

[–] slaacaa 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

The Onion was brilliant as always:

“Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years.”

[–] Sanctus 29 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Idk the 90s was not really safe all over the world.

[–] blazeknave 2 points 2 hours ago

But that wasn't our problem in the god damn US of mother fucking A!! We had Zach and Kelly to worry about.

[–] saltesc 9 points 18 hours ago

Yeah, there was a lot of bad shit going on—well, just as much there is now—but we actually noticed because nothing much else was going on in western countries. Clinton getting a gobby was a massive deal, otherwise it was watching the Gulf War, Kosovo War, Rwanda genocide, etc.

I really hope this trend pulls through. Tbh, it's my main reasoning for keeping calm about the whole situation.

Hopefully in 20 years we can look back and say that the 2020's were a crazy time. And not that mechaTrump is living in his nuclear bunker after he caused the world to nuke itself over some mexican immigrants or some shit like that. Would be nice 😁

[–] slaacaa 4 points 11 hours ago

Yeah, I’m also hoping for that.

But there’s the other view, that says the decade(s) of relative calmness we had are the exception, and we are going back to “normal” now

[–] skhayfa 10 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

90's was not HIV peak? Iraq and Middle Eastern wars were also pretty lit

[–] madcaesar 7 points 14 hours ago

Yugoslavia, war ethnic cleansing.

This meme is idiotic. Every decade has bullshit. Every decade has beauty.

If you're constantly afraid and anxious part of it is on you. Turn off the fucking news and social media.

[–] stupidcasey 4 points 19 hours ago

I see the 2030's went a little overboard pouring water on the fires.
