Netflix is cable now. And cable is expensive.

I stopped using Netflix about 5 years ago here in Finland. Content was meh for the price and I was tired of changing VPN to get better stuff. After that I have tried Disney, HBO Max (now Max), Prime Video, Skyshowtime, Apple tv. I still have Max because it only costs a fiver (”lifetime deal”) and with another fiver you get Eurosport content and next year NBA (Price getting up?).

Appwise Apple tv is superior. Simple, quick and everything works butter smooth. I just started another free 3 month deal that I got from PS4. Max probably has the worst app. Downloads are sometimes broken, only way to delete them is to delete the app and download again. Also sports section has hidden content that you only find by search button.

Who's "we" mr journalist? Salty Dog: An icon of two crossed cutlasses with a skull in the center in orange-red, black and white colors An old graybeard pirate laughing. Text saying "you have no power here".

yaarrr! "all" is a bit of an exaggeration...

Was about to say, 1337x is still with us. So no, we aren’t all going to pay.

Switched to a self hosted plex server on a dedicated Nas. Miss me with their bullshit. Even with all that I barely need to pirate anything from Netflix.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Did that. And then switched to Jellyfin because plex kept on asking for money for specific features. Couldn’t be happier with jellyfin.

[–] dai 2 points 1 day ago

I fell into the lifetime Plex pass special bandwagon. For the wife, family and mates Plex is the least abrasive solution; not that I like it - but I do like being less of a software / tech janitor.

I should really spin up another Jellyfin container and give it another run.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Jellyfin is more private but you miss out on the live tv stuff

[–] Jimmycakes 1 points 2 days ago

I had jellyfin for a while it just kept having little glitches especially on transcodes so I just paid the money for plex and it genuinely is way better. Especially just sharing access to my family via Gmail login has been a godsend for less tech savy family.

I disabled the live TV. I download all the TV I want I can't imagine using their ad riddled live TV lol.

Got an email that my price was going up, again. Realized we hardly ever use it. Cancelled my account that I'd had since 2007.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Won? According to who? I only have it because it’s bundled with my cable TV service. Max is better.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well, according to the vast user base it has compared to streamers. Unfortunately your opinion of it doesn't shape that fact.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Thanks for the unnecessarily condescending reply.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I counter it was necessary, as years of reading internet forums of users refusing to believe the dominance these streaming services have is starting to get old.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 days ago

I don't really feel like the person you're replying to ever was refusing to believe the dominance of streaming services. I know they dobbed themself in for still having cable in the year of our lord, twenty twenty and five but I think they brought up an important point. Netflix gets bundled in with a bunch of other services, like cable, internet and mobile plans. Then those people are included in the subscriber numbers, bc they are still getting something for those users, just not what you or I would pay.

Thinking about it now, this all makes sense because I bet it keeps the shareholders happy being "on top".

[–] [email protected] 21 points 3 days ago

If sailing the seas means they won... congratulations?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago

Or you could just NOT pay for it? Lmao what trash journalism is this?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What? Netflix "won"? Won what?

I watch stuff on Netflix for exactly 3 months this year, then canceled it. May/may not do it again next year, we'll see.

Today my only streaming is Amazon, because they have a far greater breadth of shows than Netflix, by a long shot. And when Amazon exposes me to a new show that I'd like to keep, I go get my own copy for my media server.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Are yall not reading the article?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

I mean, we read the headline. You want us to read the article too?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

In the end, there will only be 2 winners: Disney and Amazon

[–] MimicJar 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

"Won" is a real stretch here. The article devotes half a paragraph to their shows, let's outline them,

Stranger Things

Amazing show, hasn't had a season in years. Sure we're getting the final season this year, but that's a one month subscription after multi year wait.

Wednesday

A good show. You'd probably get me to subscribe for a month for this.

Squid Game

I'll admit I'm in the minority who didn't see this, but I heard lukewarm reviews for season 2, so I don't think season 3, if it exists, will pull anyone in.

The Night Agent

I've never heard of this. Maybe it's good but it isn't bringing in subscribers.

Paul / Tyson fight

Who cares, garbage.

Tom Brady roast

Who cares, garbage.

NFL games

For specific audiences, not me.

WWE’s Monday Night Raw,

For specific audiences, not me.

massive library of reality shows, cooking competitions, and the other filler TV

And that right there is why I consider Netflix in last place.

Netflix has a few "prestige" shows, but most of them have already ended or are ending soon. Perhaps the list will keep existing subscribers, which is good, but it isn't going to bring in anyone new, at least not long term.

[–] d00ery 2 points 2 days ago

Netflix has gone from a solid streaming service to a practically unavoidable, virtually uncancellable part of mainstream culture

Welp, guess I'm not mainstream.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

We dont even get half that since netflix does not allow specific peoples the right to access the content they pay for.

[–] NOT_RICK 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (4 children)

Anyone know of a good way to browse Netflix titles without an account? That’s honestly the only thing I miss from Netflix; discovering what to watch serendipitously

[–] [email protected] 32 points 3 days ago

JustWatch has catalogs for all the streaming services.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If you use Stremio, Cyberflix plugin can give you all the lists from all the major streaming sites.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Torrentio* plug in does too. I'm glad there's choices.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What part are you confused about?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I cannot see any plugin named like that

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh man, my bad. I had the name wrong. Its torrentio

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Torrentio does not offer any catalog. It just searches for torrents of the product you have clicked on.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The original comment user was missing the Netflix catalogs that "curate" content by genre, popularity, etc.

Torrentio does nothing of that. Cyberflix does.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You can order everything by genre and popularity, new, etc. Not sure what the problem is.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

That is not done thanks to torrentio, not at all.

[–] lordnikon 4 points 3 days ago

My strategy is use plex watchlist feature to find all the shows I want to watch on all services then when I have a few I sign up for a month watch them all then cancel and switch to something else.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

Based off your personal Netflix streaming data? There's no API for recommendations available externally. You would need to input that data into another platform. Trakt isn't the most open, but it's probably the most compatible with pirate services. Tbh I find that browsing 'top trending' on whatever add-on isn't much different specifically for targeting results from Netflix though

[–] Dadifer 4 points 3 days ago

To be honest, I don't mind paying for one service without ads. My wife needs background noise around the house. Some of the shows are really good. Otherwise... a pirate's life for me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

You only pay if you pay.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Hot take: we don't need any new content on these streaming services for at least another 5 years if not longer.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

I’ve lazily reverted to watching things on streaming websites like the good old days. can’t be bothered to torrent and it’s nice having all the services bundled into one feed so you can see what’s released lately all together.

[–] eran_morad 1 points 3 days ago

Yeah bruh, i ain’t paying shit.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 days ago

This makes me glad I avoid Netflix like the plague.
