Fucking wild that the House and Senate are just allowing him to take their power over establishing law.

It was a ban put in place by a piece of legislation passed by both chambers. It needed to be resolved the same way.

We are now in a dictatorship.

I didn't even want Tiktok to be banned in the first place... but even I can see how dangerous this is.

From TFA:

The law banning TikTok, which was scheduled to go into effect Sunday, allows the president to grant a 90-day extension before the ban is enforced, provided certain criteria are met.

Also:

After the Supreme Court greenlit the law on Friday, the Biden administration issued a statement saying it would not enforce the ban, leaving that responsibility to Trump.

Though some Senators contradict that.

Sens. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., also issued a statement celebrating the ban, and saying they don't see a basis for an extension like Trump has proposed.

"Now that the law has taken effect, there’s no legal basis for any kind of ‘extension’ of its effective date. [...]

So, we have to let the law play out. It doesn't yet seem like we're abandoning the rule of law at this point.

What is TFA? EDIT: The Fucking Article, I assume.

The law banning TikTok, which was scheduled to go into effect Sunday, allows the president to grant a 90-day extension before the ban is enforced, provided certain criteria are met.

First I've ever heard of this. I wish the article explained what the criteria were.

Dictatorships don't usually end well for the dictators.

At least that's what history books seem to think.

[–] njm1314 15 points 1 day ago

Yeah that's not true at all. They don't always end well for the next dictator. But a lot of dictators are just fine.

I hate TikTok even more now.

[–] gnomesaiyan 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

It's to a point my recent Google searches have -tiktok next to -reddit. Annoying that I have to sift through this trash.

If you use Kagi it will let you filter sites by default.

Trump indicated that he wanted it to be available to broadcast his inauguration on Monday.

There it is.

[–] ninjabard 17 points 1 day ago

I didn't use it before. I now have more reason to never use it.

Biden does a thing, everyone thanks Trump.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Much like he Afghanistan withdrawal, Trump started it and Biden continued it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

It was cool when Trump negotiated it but a dereliction of duty when Biden did what Trump promised. You can't win with the morons who worship Trump.

[–] ZephyrXero 3 points 1 day ago

And in this case it's a thing Trump himself started

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

Deleted it. I sure as hell don’t want an American propaganda tool sucking up all my data.

[–] WrenFeathers 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Sooo…. We all know this is was planned all along, right?

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I actually think Meta bought it. Facebook made a tiktok account yesterday, and Shou's profile no longer says "CEO" as of today.

[–] WrenFeathers 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wow… I didn’t know that. This bodes badly.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

No other explanation makes sense to me.

Nothing has changed, Trump isn't president yet. There was no reason that they had to shut down. Yet they shutdown anyway, for like 12 hours. The same 12 hours that a majority of Americans are sleeping... Seems obvious what happened.

[–] ZephyrXero 2 points 1 day ago

I mean, Biden did put out that statement a few days ago that said it would just be a stunt and they didn't plan on enforcing it

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

My guess is that they are complying with the law and that Tiktok and Meta signed an MOU, so now they can have their extension.

My rationale is that FB made a Tiktok account yesterday, and started allowing people to link their accounts to tiktok. Then when Tiktok came back online Shou's profile no longer said CEO.

[–] xc2215x 3 points 1 day ago

This was all a complete waste.

[–] adam_y 2 points 1 day ago

See this? This is my shocked face.

This was so obviously what was going to happen.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Well that was fast.
