Average seems like a weird statistic to use here. I'd want to at least also know the median.

[–] formergijoe 8 points 1 day ago

One of the things I learned from "How to Lie with Statistics," is when an article or ad says "average" thet could mean the mean, median, or mode depending on which fits the desired narrative best. The reader usually assumes the writer is referring to the mean which helps in establishing these misleading narratives.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

The median must be 2 or 3 then.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/other/new-data-here-s-how-many-sexual-partners-most-americans-have-had/ar-BB1ob50P

(This study was conducted by Dr. Jenni Skyler, PhD, LMFT, C-PST, licensed marriage and family therapist, certified sex therapist, board-certified sex researcher and a spokesperson for Adam & Eve, a sex toy company that commissioned the study)

Results suggest nearly 10% of individuals polled said they'd never had sex, while 35% said they'd been with one partner. Forty-three percent reported between two to 10 partners, and 7% had been with 11 to 25 partners. Just over 4% said they'd had intercourse with 26 to 40, 2% said they had 41 to 75, 3% reported 76 to 100 partners, and 3% reported more than 100 partners.

So, if you go by median instead of mean, its probably actually lower than 5 (probably 3 ish?), as 45% of people have had one sexual partner or less.

Displayed in another way:

0 partners : 10% of pop.

1 partner: 35% of pop.

2 - 10 partners: 43% of pop.

11 - 25 partners: 7% of pop.

26 - 40 partners: 4% of pop.

41 - 75 partners: 2% of pop.

76 - 100 partners: 3% of pop.

100+ partners: 3% of pop.

Last time I was on a dating app that had a free commenting ability and like community threads... think it was boo? Some kind of weird, basically instagram but for dating, but everyone just used it like it was instagram...

I'd run into like 23 year olds saying shit like 'this person my age was saying they've got a 200+ body count, is that normal?'

And I'd respond 'It's not impossible, but uh, chances are that they're either lying, or they're literally a sex worker, pornstar or something, that's extremely abnormal.'

I'm 35 and in the 11-25 tranche, more than average, maybe even outside of one StdDev, but its astounding how many people think that just everyone has an average of a different sexual partner for every week or two past the age of 16.

There are people that approximate that, but its pretty damn rare.

[–] BugleFingers 7 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I'm in the 11-25 range too, which is actually surprising to me. I've two friends who probably are the tier above that and the vast majority of the people I know are below that.

The only person I can think of that may have been even a tier above that did some work in that area, was an attractive girl, and high libido. Definitely an outlier.

TBH though I would've thought the average would've been higher

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

^jesus.

...just, how?

Edit: Also, if the sequence is adjusted to sum to 100% (β‰ 104), the last line would be more accurate as 0.01%.

I'm in my slut era!

I say to myself

Sitting in my apartment alone

For the billionth day in a row

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well, at least you seem to be immortal

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Feels like it, I'd love to kill myself

[–] AdolfSchmitler 64 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Id imagine there's a few zeros dragging the average down.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Well there are also a few who are way above the average dragging it back up again. We need to see a distribution curve

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)
[–] Feathercrown 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

This is still a bit misleading visually, because the population numbers for the bars are totalled, not distributed among the partner counts within each category. Eg. each partner count within the 2-10 partner bar has an average of ~5% of the population, which is less than the 0-partner bar, but they add up to ~45%, more than the 1-partner bar.

[–] Webster 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Red line appears to be total by specific percentage (maybe smoothed?)

[–] Feathercrown 1 points 1 day ago

Oh yeah, true! Although that reveals that we're missing fine-grained data above 0 and 1, so even with smoothing it's not very detailed

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Perfect! Thanks!

[–] Frozengyro 7 points 1 day ago

For every person who fucked 30 people, you need 6 people who never had sex to bring the average back to 5. I find 5 to be impossibly low, even as someone who's number is 5.

I’m a picky slut and only have had seven sexual partners. One of them had over 50, though.

So there’s at least 55 people with no partners we’re making up for

Mormons be skewing the data!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Wait, they're shaking the data tables now, too?

[–] Fredselfish 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Guess I'm a whore too, if that is true. I in the mid tens with sex partners. I thought I was on the low end. Is this a legit statistic?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

40 to 60 sex partners is way above average by every statistic I've ever seen

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Shame shame shame! Shame you couldn't bang more.

I would probably have been a whore but I hit a brick wall at 26. Had like 6 relationships from 18-26 and then 0 after. Over a decade later, almost 40 now it's really feeling like that last one is really the last. "lol"

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

I'm right there with ya, in my own way, and I swear to all that's holy: the next one won't be the last β€” but it also won't be the previous one (s). And, that's enough for me to make damn sure I work on me in the meantime. 🀘🏼

[–] [email protected] 31 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Consider the fact that people have vastly different opinions on sex. Some people don't want to do it outside of commitment. Some never want to do it at all.

If your number is higher than the average, it means nothing. The average for your subgroup may be vastly different, so there is no reason to bring in a value judgment.

Tldr: I'd love to see a study of how many different partners the average wild slut has.

[–] olafurp 14 points 1 day ago

That's slut logic, I'm also slut

[–] PumaStoleMyBluff 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My straight friends think I'm a whore and my gay friends think I'm a pilgrim 🀷🏻

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

Some of my friends also take time off from constant fucking to wax poetic on my proclivities. It's their way of expressing envy. They're such dears.

[–] HexesofVexes 32 points 1 day ago

Median might be a better measure here one feels!

I feel like there's some statistical fuckery going on here. I feel like in a lot of super religious communities 2 is a lot, maybe 3 depending on how many youth pastors talked you into a blowie when you were 14. Versus in a lot of more liberal communities premarital sex and divorces are a lot more common. And those communities reproduce like fucking rabbits vs other communities are out here fucking a lot but only reproducing responsibly.

I've also wondered if a lot of the highly religious women I grew up with finding sex unpleasant or a chore is mostly just due to the sex being bad. If they won't even tell you what a clitoris is, the men are literally taught that they're owed it and they don't need to bother making it pleasant, and then add in that (EDIT: LATE) masturbation in women is associated with inability to orgasm as an adult... best case scenario most of the experience is just one long chafing sensation. No wonder all the women I grew up with mostly just found the whole thing gross!

edit: lol my phone cut out the word late before masturbation and that completely changes the meaning of that sentence. What I meant to say is that studies show that if women don't masturbate when they're young they're at much higher risk for anorgasmia later in life.

[–] Anticorp 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It has a lot to do with the guilt associated with premarital sex. I know a fundamentalist Christian woman who would get physically ill after going too far with her boyfriend, even though they still stopped before actual sex. Once she got married that went away.

[–] baldingpudenda 5 points 1 day ago

A friend confided that, no matter how much he tried to not masturbate, he would always end up doing it and the guilt was fucking with him. I told him I masturbated at least once a day, averaged twice, sometimes up to 5 on the weekends and watched any type of porn I could get my hands on.

This surprised him as I was a good upstanding person and an altar boy. I asked him if he was trying to fuck any girl that would give him the time of day. I confessed that I fell in love with girls just because they smelled good when they passed by and would get hard by a smile, a friend touching my arm, a small look at cleavage, a tight shirt across big tits, peaking underwear on their lower back, etc.

Why would god give you raging hormones if not to find someone and want to fuck? Your body, that god made, is giving you these urges and then he gets pissed off when you give into them? Just masturbate and go to confession about every 3 months.

Fuck. Remembering, as I typed this, of his visible relief and how much his demeanor changed for the better after our talk got me upset. Fuck religious bullshit. To top it off, when I got married by the church, we had to do a couples seminar to go over specifics of marriage, talking things out, help the church can give and expectations, etc. It ended with a confessional, not as a couple it's always alone, and I confessed we've had premarital sex. The priest just went, of course! It's only natural.

Then why all the guilt tripping and mental anguish when we are teens!

I wonder if that statistic is still true since the proliferation of "dating" apps. You used to have to put in a considerable amount of effort for a one-night-stand. I was already married before dating apps hit the scene, but my understanding is there are millions of people out there just messaging "wanna fuck?" to each other and then hooking up for the night. Society's attitude towards ~~being a ho~~ casual sex is quite different now too. So, I question the accuracy of their average statistic in modern times.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

People have less sex overall. I dont think that dating apps necessarily increased the numbers.
