Summary

Texas has seen a spike in abandoned newborns since its abortion ban, with some infants found dead in dumpsters or ditches.

Critics link the rise to reduced access to abortion, cuts to prenatal care, underfunded safe haven programs, and fear of deportation among undocumented women.

Texas Republicans have resisted funding awareness campaigns for safe haven laws, instead allocating $165 million to crisis pregnancy centers that prioritize deterring abortion over aiding women.

The lack of support has drawn condemnation, highlighting the broader consequences of restrictive reproductive policies.

Just a reminder that Texas has safe haven drop boxes at fire stations and post offices specifically for dropping off unwanted babies, but they’ve slashed the funding and refuse to publicize their existence in favor of “crisis intervention centers”

Just a reminder that Texas has safe haven drop boxes at fire stations and post offices specifically for dropping off unwanted babies,

In case anyone thinks this is a new concept, one of the most influential pieces of early Renaissance architecture (Ospedale degli Innocenti) had a rotating drop-off port for babies. There was someone on the other side of the wall 24/7.

Edit: Atlas Obscura has an article on it

This is amazing. A baby carousel, statue of Mary pointing to the correct location. Baby goes around a loop, down a slide and lands in a manger. Amazing! But the article definitely needs more pictures!

Cruelty was always the end goal.

The GOP hates children, that's why they want to make sure they don't get fed. All the screaming about 'abortions' is really about controlling and OWNING women.

They're just hoping the majority of these abandoned or otherwise dead children are non-white.

Almost as if people are their own fully functioning human beings, and punishing them with life-altering consequences makes them desperate not to get punished, and not just suddenly obedient to you in all things ignoring all their own priorities and decisions.

Babies left in dumpsters is an atrocity. Those responsible for causing the societal change that started it need to be hung. Don't blame the parent that didn't want the child when they were forced to have it. Who the hell thinks it's a good idea to force women to have children they don't want??? THAT'S HOW YOU GET UNWANTED DELIQUENTS IN SOCIETY YOU INBRED SLOTHS! UNLESS YOU'RE PAYING FOR THE MOTHERS TIME, BODY REPAIRS, AND EMOTIONAL DAMAGE YOU HAVE NO SAY IN IT! End of fuckin story.

Holy shit I'm gonna go to hell for that though ain't I?

Hopefully not before the lawmakers who created this nightmare in the first place.

Why would you go to Hell just for making a Modest Proposal?

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle..

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago

Of course they don't care. The babies aren't being aborted.

Offtopic, but my mom always make jokes that she found me in a dumpster and that I was adopted. I did not like the "jokes", but reading this headline just got a chuckle remembering my mom's stupid jokes.

These ~~people~~ politicians lack empathy, and among other things, basic human decency. I'm disgusted how so many human beings can be such monsters.

I honestly can't tell if you're referring to the mothers who are being forced to carry these unwanted pregnancies to term or the politicians that put the laws in place.
