RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

The Chats are everything.

Although I'm a bigger fan of "Identity Theft" than Smoko

I saw a flat Earther say that Australians on internet are paid by NASA to make people believe in a round Earth. Australia doesn't exist 🤣

I think they're equally funny and they remind me of Canadians.

Disclaimer: As a Canadian, it could be a commonwealth thing.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Y’all got some funny Canadians too. That Jared Keeso and his giant neck are something else

[–] dogsnest 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I met a funny Canadian this one time: he said something about grits and snorting coke off Natalie Portman's ass.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

Wait what now? This sounds like an inside joke that I’m on the outside of

New Zealanders get along well with Canadians. Canadians don't like Australians, Kiwis don't like Americans, and Americans and Aussies seem to be mates.

No time to be funny. They are busy trying not to be killed by something dangerous.

I saw a picture of an Australian cow eating a snake. I'm not sure how the food chain works in Australia.

Answer: If it can be eaten, it will be eaten, or envenomated while trying. That snake was full of Australian cow venom, the most potent cow venom in the world!

Australians are already the ones being made fun of most of the time. That must count for something.

I mean look at this. Jemaine, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, the guy that did Summer Heights High with all his different characters, the Aunty Donna folks.

Who tf can compete ?

Oh no! Are they? Flippin Hole

[–] BarbecueCowboy 2 points 6 months ago

I'm honestly kinda conflicted on Rhys Darby now. He's hilarious in a lot of stuff, but has anyone seen his standup? Maybe it's got regional appeal, but felt super super bland. It made me look at some of his other stuff, I feel like he's got a few really good roles that he's really known for and a lot more stuff where he just kinda phones it in.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The guy who did Summer Heights High? He was Australian, and a racist.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Yeah wasnt one of the characters basically a New Zealand version of blackface?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

Yep, that was him.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

You know what- I’m stating to think there are some funny Australians after all. Sorry to hear about the racist one though

[–] Today 1 points 6 months ago

Summer height high.... I forgot your funny that was. Good one!

[–] John_McMurray 0 points 6 months ago

Literally every other country. Australians think Tim Minchin is funny. There's something wrong with them

[–] John_McMurray 3 points 6 months ago

Sounds about right. Australians have a "macho" culture, meat heads aren't often intentionally funny.

[–] jenny_ball 2 points 6 months ago

it's the accent

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

A lot of my favorite YouTubers are from Australia and quite funny. They're always making explosives in their shed and bitching about their thesis being due!

^Bonus points if you know the YouTube channel I am referencing.^

[–] Resol 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I know an Australian who runs a YouTube channel called DankPods (you might've heard of it), and he's pretty damn funny.

[–] Benaaasaaas 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Also Garbage Time and The Drum Thing

[–] Resol 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Don't forget "Hello, I'm Gaming"

He also had a music channel called Dankmus where it's basically just remixes of Simpsons episodes. Not sure why that one is so inactive.

[–] BuckenBerry 2 points 6 months ago

Not sure why that one is so inactive.

All the successful kiwis move to Australia because we pay better but they keep their kiwi identity.

With all this top talent coming over we get to sit back and laugh.
