Why can't the german government just be happy with their most famous game developed there GOLLUM by Daedelic studio? Why do they need more?

[–] [email protected] 26 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Its very sad that Daedelic is remembered for that because they made some actually good games before they got cash hungry and went public (wich is btw always the point a studio stops working for the consumer and starts working for the holders)

Their best games (Edna, Deponia, ...) were all made when Poki was still there. During that time they made some of the best modern pint-and-click adventures.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago

Absolutely.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Before that they were remembered for the video game where you sell a black woman into slavery... As an organ grinder monkey. This is just karma.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

What game are you talking about?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The third(?) Deponia game. Where you have the clones. There's one segment where you cause a woman to lose her job, trap her in a sewer, and "offer" her a job to escape the sewer by working as an organ grinder monkey. It's really fucked up.

Maybe not as fucked up as the puzzle where you lure a group of kids into a creepy guys van.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Deponia was really fucked up all together thats the fucking point.

Lol you didn't even know it was a thing and now you're an expert on it. And of course you immediately defend it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You didn't even know this person existed before they commented saying the company that makes the game you're talking about used to be good and now you know everything about them. Wild.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Bro do you have to know every bit of every game to say a studio made Objectively good content?

And the mentioned thing isn't even bad in terms of gameplay, even if you personally don't like the one story element.

Get a life man.

Silly me, thinking that Crysis was the most famous German game.

Well, Daedelic is closed. They need a new Daedelic.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

In defense of this game

Their music's are very very solids and now underated because no one plyaed the game (and I didn't too but go listen to them, great DND ambiance Cool link)

[–] [email protected] 29 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The German government wants... Yeah and their bullshit censoring of games.

[–] leave_it_blank 13 points 6 months ago (1 children)

To be fair, it has gotten a lot better. Games rarely get censored anymore. Dying Light 2 comes to mind. The Index also has become rare, also the complete confiscation.

But yes, I'm with you, the authorities have to go, the European classification should be enough!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I'll forever be salty about Carmageddon having zombies with green blood.

[–] leave_it_blank 1 points 6 months ago

And please never forget the Multiverse of Soldier of Fortune 2, with their alternate timeline of Robot Humans. That was for me the most rediculous thing in my gaming career!

[–] hoshikarakitaridia 22 points 6 months ago (4 children)

I mean there's been a bunch of small games developed by German game studios but it's not like it's easy around here

[–] [email protected] 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Bureaucracy. But thats the main problem in all industries...

Also Crysis and FarCry are German (or where fir FarCry) Anno is also a thing Germany made. Its just not at all profitable to get big in Germany, things that sell get sold to other publishers.

[–] psmgx 16 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Bureaucracy

Arguably their chief export. Have you ever had to use SAP?

[–] a4ng3l 9 points 6 months ago

Rude but also true xD

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

I mean working with SAP is a lot easier than doing the same work without it...

You mean the studio that just at the beginning of this year died because of budget cuts of a big Corp? Not that I want to defend Elex2

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

It's not like Belgium does anything special either for the games industry. Their success is just due to hard work and good management by a studio that's taking the long term view and it's passionate about the work.

Just for context, you can't actually apply anymore and it's been like that for about a year. And that's not the first time period for which aplications are blocked.

In addition, both founding a start-up and actually applying is a lot of bureaucracy. You've probably run dry of money long before it's approved.

Lastly, I believe they mostly fund mobile games.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 6 months ago

Short story time. In USA, over 25 years ago, a Russian immigrant used to give me rides down the peninsula to work in the early hours. I wondered at his ability to survive and provide for a family in our high cost of living area. He told me that applying for government and nongovernmental aid and so on was easy for him because he was used to the much worse Soviet bureaucracy.

Not only this, they cut the budget starting 2025 by a lot and only productions with >400k on their own will be qualified to apply for a state funding. Cause that will be a good reason for each state (Bundesland) to rise their funding (Berlin has some millions and Hessen 260k/year funding budget). Or at least that was one of the arguments to cut the state budget.

[–] De_Narm 3 points 6 months ago

Don't get me started on state funding, there is none at my location.

If they start saying this about The Witcher or Cyberpunk, we should get really worried.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

:) they don't know that its from (temporarily not) Germany

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

They have Egosoft and their X universe games. Epic sandbox galactic games. I love my X3 empires.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

Sorry, too much censorship in Germany...
