This image is polarization lines drawn over the original to attempt to give more detail. You can see the original behind it

From the article:

The lines mark the orientation of polarization, which is related to the magnetic field around the shadow of the black hole.

Really cool, but just not what OPs headline says

One of my worst pet peeves is people claiming renders from scientific data are the same as a photograph. Amazing how I figured it out in highschool and I'm still seeing headlines banking on this misconception.

A digital photograph is also a render from data, change my mind.

And inside is a single planet that defies logic, and on that planet is God with a capital G. He wants a starship to escape the planet and can be killed by a few photon torpedoes.

I feel your pain, share it with me

Or if you go back a little farther, inside is a planet where magic is real run by the actual Lucifer and Asmodeus.

Man, the Animated Series is wild.

Here's the magnetic field of Op's mom

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

Your mom jokes are like photons, they never get old.

Didnโ€™t someone already do this a few years ago? Wouldnโ€™t this be the second clear image?

[โ€“] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The first image was of radio signals so not exactly "light" as we'd think of it typically. This is supposedly polarized light so technically an "actual image" in the way we think of pictures involving light.

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

Ahh! Thanks for clarifying! Very appreciated!

I think you might be thinking of a different black hole. This one is in our galaxy, the first one imaged was in m87. The one in our galaxy is actually harder to "see" as there is stuff in the way.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

There were two one was m87, and I'm sure the other one was Sagittarius A*

"clear image"
