A ban on four cosmetic surgeries for pets came into effect in Quebec today, putting an end to vocal cord removal, ear cropping, tail trimming and cat declawing for aesthetic purposes.

Veterinarians say the non-essential procedures unduly expose animals to risks associated with anesthesia and can lead to behavioural issues.

The Quebec regulation still allows veterinarians to recommend the surgeries for medical therapeutic purposes, and it makes an exception for the ear cropping of stray cats in authorized capture, sterilize and release programs.

...

Among its other provisions are a ban on euthanasia by inhalation, a ban on leashing an animal without a collar, a ban on mating animals whose sizes are incompatible and a ban on feeding meat to pet pigs.

vocal cord removal? that's a "cosmetic" surgery? wtf, might as well just sew their anus shut so you don't have to deal with animal poop too. tf is wrong with people?

Yeah it's one of those things that gets outlawed and you think "wait, enough people were doing that to make it worth their time drafting a law about it?" Shame on vets for offering it too but if that's the stuff they do, what kind of monstrous requests do they get that they turn down?

But Princess Fluffy Piddles deserves the biggest six breasts modern medicine can deliver

My least favorite cat fact I learned recently is that they can have random numbers of nipples. Sometimes even odd numbers of nipples. Enjoy!

Well this all took a weird turn into cats with boobs.

Not on the banned list, have at it.

"a ban on leashing an animal without a collar."

Am I not awake enough and missing something? Are harnesses unacceptable? It's someone doing something stupid that I haven't heard of before?

[–] [email protected] 27 points 9 months ago

Might refer to choke chains.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 9 months ago (1 children)

A lot of vets and boarding facilities loop a leash around the neck, so it can choke the animal if they pull too hard.

Yes but on the other hand, some dogs can and do regularly slip out of collars. My golden has always been very anxious and has slipped his collar a number of times because he gets scared and backs up unexpectedly and suddenly he's collarless. I use a slip lead now because he cannot back out of it. Animals are not dying because of vets using slip leads, this seems like a ridiculous reason for a regulation like this. Animals can choke themselves on a normal collar just as easily.

Martingale collars have a limited slip to avoid backing out, without completely choking.

So, reading the responses you’ve gotten, it’s totally someone doing something stupid that you haven’t heard of before. That’s because you have basic common sense and aren’t cruel to animals.

I didn't know they gave rats botox and face lifts. I'm going to have nightmares.

Well usually when I see Quebec in a headline I get a bit worried but these seem like good moves. Also… I’d never considered the risk of mating animals whose sizes are incompatible. Interesting.

a ban on feeding meat to pet pigs.

Somewhere Robert Pickton is chuckling to himself.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Wait, is it bad to feed pigs meat? I thought they were natural omnivores. Is this about an issue of feeding them spoiled meat? Or is this the whole "feed a body to a pig" thing?

Cause if someones cleaning murders with pigs, they arent worried about its legality.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

This suggests it's a bad idea to feed them raw meat for a number of reasons. I assume "pet pigs" is key here as farm pigs would be fed properly treated meat and wouldn't be mixing with other animals. You don't really want a pet pigs getting a taste for raw meat and blood!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Oh, raw meat for sure. I wouldnt feed a pet raw anything unless I got a vets thumbs up, cooked is safer across the board.

I thought it meant meat, period.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

It may do for other reasons but it could just be they went with any meat just to remove ambiguity. You'd need to dig into the thinking behind that one.
