dumb cars will be worth their weight in gold soon

[–] [email protected] 62 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Just like how manual cars became anti theft.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

My friend has his Kia broken into and started, but it’s a standard so they ditched it hahaha

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago (3 children)

That's if you can find one for an affordable price.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod 4 points 1 month ago

I got a decent manual for about $12k back in February. And it was one of three on the lot I was there to look at all around that price: A GTI, a WRX, and a Mini.

I went with the GTI

[–] swag_money 3 points 1 month ago

right before the used car market exploded i got my manual Subaru for $3400 when it was worth about 10-12k because of a misfire. yeah it just had the wrong spark plugs in it :p and it's about as dumb as they come. it has a radio, abs, and cruise control - no other driving assists or telemetry

The fun tax is real... except unllike the poster below, I was looking for a Base model Subaru and not the WRX (even though the WRX is a bucket list car)

most car thiefs can't drive a manual transmission

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago

Oh right in the USA there are mostly automatic cars

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

Manual transmission is an anti theft device because car jackers can only drive automatic

[–] [email protected] 45 points 1 month ago (1 children)

My car got dumbed for me because they killed the 3g network it was running on

[–] Dran_Arcana 57 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Just because you can't use it doesn't mean a hacker can't. If someone discovered a vulnerability in the 3g handshake or encryption protocol, it could be an avenue for an RCE.

Especially when there are no security updates anymore. They should just rip out any possible receiver there is for mobile communication

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago

Honestly if someone manages to figure that out I would want to know, that way I can finally use my cars remote start 😄

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I wish, but most people don't know / care about this stuff, it's not going to really percolate into the public consciousness .

According to the dealership my car isn't worth it's weight grass clippings because it's too old.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

lol it's not the dealers who will want them

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (3 children)

You could just find and disable the wireless modems.

[–] this_1_is_mine 43 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Cool just like trying to replace a blower motor in a modern car feel free to rip the entire dash out only to find out it has a second antenna all the way in the back underneath the spare tire also behind a tail light which somehow requires you to remove the muffler to get to....

[–] skyspydude1 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Or just pull this fuse for the module?

[–] this_1_is_mine 1 points 1 month ago

If you can.... Without breaking something vital thats on the same circuit as something so non-vital as turn signals or headlights. You know from the companies so smart as to not wire all... I mean all the positive hots through the ignition or light switch...... Nothing like an ignition that's 200°f.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

brb, i have a muffler, a spare, and an entire dash to remove immediatly.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 month ago (4 children)

You'd probably have more luck installing a signal jammer in your car.

The best you can hope for is a rootkit and some Linux-based OS for cars to be developed so you can take full control.

[–] Thrashy 15 points 1 month ago

FWIW there is a cottage industry for OnStar disable/delete mods for GM vehicles. It can be done, usually without breaking too much else of the car's electronic functionality.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'd rather poke the GSM modem with a screwdriver.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

if you can find it, and all it's backups..

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago

Also, jammers are illegal pretty much everywhere.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

i fucking KNEW we would be jailbreaking cars eventually.

and you bet they will come up with locked bootloaders.

[–] StrongHorseWeakNeigh 5 points 1 month ago

Not only what that other person said but it would probably void the warranty too.

Happy to have my 2012 civic. One of the last gens without a telemetry unit I think.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I drive a 2014 si

That Civic is hands down the most bulletproof, refined and perfected k-series car Honda ever produced, or ever will, at this point.

If anyone reading this wants a V6, find a manual TL. Equally bulletproof, but with a J-series and room to stretch out and they are CHEAP for zero reason on the market. I don't even understand it other than they don't really have tuning potential, but as a commuter car, they can't be beat for the price to comfort. They ride like clouds and have 300hp to punch with if you stomp them down an offramp.

I have a '01 Citroen and I'm gonna run it to the ground. She needs a big overhaul now, but for a 190'000Km car my baby is still pretty good.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

The car will still work if you take the radio out or put a faraday cage around it, maybe that'll become a thing in the future, but that might fuck with the paid charging infrastructure for EVs. Doesn't impact gas.
