If someone gets angry at "my female friends" that sounds like a them problem, tbh. I've never met anyone that cared about that use, but your mileage might vary, I guess.
I have unfortunately. Hell there are people in this very thread saying that it's never acceptable to refer to a human using the word "female" outside of a scientific/medical context, which would include my usage as "not ok."
