Tell me you live in the US without telling me you live in the US:

[–] [email protected] 13 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The US or the UK*. In the UK, teeth are considered premium bones.

There are such things as NHS dentists, but you have to make an appointment when you're born to see them when you're in your 40s.

The pain is unbearable, and that's from a small hole. Imagine how painful it is whilst actively drilling a LARGE hole. All of the pain. Like, your whole body inadvertently clenches due to the unbelievable amount of pain.

No way did this happen...

[–] Bytemeister 46 points 11 months ago (4 children)

Been in this kind of dental pain. You'd pull the tooth long before you'd consider drillin' n fillin' it yourself.

If anyone is in this pain, you should know this...

1: Don't ignore it. It won't go away, and there is usually an infection that can spread to your jaw or other teeth. It needs to be taken care of by a professional ASAP.

2: You can take an NSAID with a Non-NSAID pain reliever, and it is just about the only thing that can relieve this pain. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen were my only relief while waiting for my dental appointment.

My brother in law was hospitalized twice because he had a bacterial infection in his spinal cord. They put a needle into his aorta to inject antibiotics. They finally found that it all stemmed from an infected tooth.

Afaik, rarely an unattended tooth infection can break through to the sinus and even cause sepsis https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/tooth-abscess/symptoms-causes/syc-20350901. Also rarely an infection in the lower jaw can spread down into the neck, causing rapid swelling that if untreated can cut off your breathing and suffocate you https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23457-ludwigs-angina. Though I’m not sure why the latter is named Ludwig’s Angina since I don’t think it’s associated with heart pain.

TLDR: small risk of dying if a dental infection isn’t treated and infection spreads

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

AFAIK angina comes from the Latin word angere which means to suffocate.

Angina pectoris being suffocating chest pain, often accompanied by shortness of breath.

And Ludwig angina litteraly suffocating a person via swelling.

[–] SpaceNoodle 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Opioids like Tramadol can also help with the pain.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

Yeah I think I'd try an ice skate and a rock Castaway style before i attempted a DIY root canal.

[–] RainfallSonata 43 points 11 months ago (1 children)

How can he afford the equipment but not the dental bill?

[–] RIP_Cheems 32 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

The equipment is approximately $400-$1000, and root canal is anywhere from $600-$1600. Maybe they got a bad price and decided it would be cheaper to do it themselves?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 11 months ago

Will probably be fun when he inevitably gets an infection

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Couldn't he travel to Mexico and get it done properly for that price?

[–] RIP_Cheems 4 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Assuming you want to got to, say, Mexico city, it costs a little over $800. The root canal in Mexico cost $250-$500, making the total cost $1050-$1300. Unless they are already in Mexico, I don't think this is any better of an option.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

It is better because it will be done by a dentist and not by the guy himself.

[–] [email protected] 36 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I can imagine someone watching a few YouTube videos and thinking they can pull their own tooth, but doing a root canal on yourself is a little much. Bad joke.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 11 months ago (2 children)

objection: this is fucking 4chan

[–] gaiussabinus 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Agreed. Remember that kid that castrated himself? Or the guy who hung himself from the radiator on a live feed. Root canal is small fry.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

I’m sorry, but WHAT?!

Do not answer me, but Jesus fucking Christ, what in all fuck.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Good point. I was assuming average intelligence. They have repeatedly shown that they are below average.

[–] anarchy79 3 points 11 months ago

Maybe they're average intelligence, but with above level go getter attitude?

A.K.A. Living in the US with their shitty healthcare. Source: I’m USian.

[–] QuaternionsRock 13 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Unfortunately, dental care isn’t included in a lot of the universal healthcare systems we admire. Recognizing the need for first-class dental (and mental health) care is a top priority almost globally.

[–] a4ng3l 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I consider Belgium having a generally admirable healthcare system but as of late our practicians have a tendency to opt out of the fully reimbursed program, at least in dentistry and eye doctors. So typically an appointment should be like 27€ and we get like 24 back but last eye doctor appointment was 70€… and getting an appointment in an opted-in specialist means years of delay. That and basically we have fewer and fewer doctors so it’s already fun to get an appointment altogether. So it’s still a trade off really even though we have overall a possible better deal.

[–] alvvayson 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Belgium definitely has a good system, most European countries do.

But all of our systems are going to get under a lot of stress, because an aging population requires more healthcare and there is a lack of medical personnel.

Throwing money at the problem is part of the solution, but it also fails in many ways: there is a risk that it just raises profits and salaries of health care professionals without adding more people to actually do more work. There is even a risk that health care professionals start working less thanks to higher rates. And finally, the money has to come from somewhere, i.e. we still need people to drive the rest of the economy.

It's a taboo to say it, but it is inevitable that we will need to lower our level of healthcare consumption as the population ages.

It's better to do it in a smart and deliberate way to minimize the impact, otherwise reality will force it in unpleasant ways, which is what you are witnessing now.

[–] a4ng3l 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I agree with your opinion on the causes but I strongly disagree that we should accept to “lower our level of healthcare”; I’m absolutely fed up with dealing with the aftermath of the previous generations already. At least I want to be able to be taken care of.

[–] Chriswild 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Does your country have worse healthcare now because of previous generations?

[–] a4ng3l 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The point made above is that decrease of the quality of our healthcare system is necessary due to an ageing population and its reliance on the system. Soooo yes kindof?

[–] Chriswild 2 points 11 months ago

Oh ok that makes more sense thank you

This text doesn't look very green. Maybe it's stained red with Anon's blood?

Came here to say this was probably posted by Bob Mortimer.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Can't load the clip, but I'm guessing it's the guy on Would I Lie to You? doing his own dentistry! He always has a great story.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Exactly the one. His stories are always amazing!

[–] fruitSnackSupreme 1 points 11 months ago

The difference is, he's working on veneers. So no pain to himself.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 11 months ago (3 children)

Oil of clove will numb the pain and no need for a prescription. Get the tooth pulled it is far cheaper.

I got a root canal and a temporary crown, a few years later I got a crown, many years later the crown came off because there wasn't enough tooth to anchor it. I got the tooth pulled but I had waited so long that the tooth started getting absorbed into my jaw and it took 4-5 hours of hammering to break it out of my jaw. The dentist needed to take breaks from the hammering.

My advice is don't waste the time doing all the other steps when you will just need it pulled later. If you can get the tooth without it being broken you may get to make a custom implant in the future.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Oil of clove??

Just go to the fucking dentist, even third world countries have public healthcare for such extreme issues.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

America: Fuck yeah!

[–] JGrffn 2 points 11 months ago

I am constantly amazed at this for the US. I'm from Honduras, and most dentist stuff is like 20 bucks, with some more intricate things running you maybe 60 to 90 usd. I've literally never spent more than that on a dentist visit in my life, and I've been to at least 5 dentists in all 30 years, stayed loyal to two of them because they have been so good, they're the kind of people you just stick to.

[–] SamuraiBeandog 4 points 11 months ago

I believe that having a tooth out can lead to your other teeth moving over time, due to the gap in the line.

[–] anarchy79 2 points 11 months ago

I'll box that sucker out for one tenth of the price and ten times as fast.
