To be fair, he's been into Tolkien since adolescence and is really excited to share. It's just... intense.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Ha, my wife does this too because she's read the books and I haven't.

I have had to watch LOTR twice now for my fiance. They are soooo long.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Did you get the Special Extended Edition?

[–] NocturnalMorning 12 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I think I said no to the extended edition, lol.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 year ago (2 children)

How can you watch LOTR but not the extended edition? It’s outrageous it’s unfair!

[–] NocturnalMorning 10 points 1 year ago

I asked her, she agrees with you. I'm not a good partner apparently.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@nitefox federation is trippy. I'm seeing this and replying on Mastodon timeline but it's a Lemmy post 😳

Not long enough

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Mine tried to go for a weekend marathon. I cannot give that much attention to anything in my life ever.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

It doesn't take a weekend, you do that in a mere 11.5 hours

[–] ickplant 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

One day I'll get to the books so I don't have to ask for his help every time there is a book vs movie meme, lol.

There is a fun podcast called Drunk History of Middle Earth that is essentially this dynamic the whole time - a husband/wife duo where the guy is trying to teach her about Tolkien. She's genuinely open to it, so it's probably less annoying than some other instances of that pattern. Aside from the hearing new perspectives on the lore, it's interesting to vicariously experience the stories for the first time again.

Also I love their accents, and how they sometimes expose their personal lives to the world and talk through stuff as a couple - it's very endearing

Edit to add: there are no ads! It's so refreshing

[–] ickplant 4 points 1 year ago

That sound adorable and fun, thank you for the recommendation!

[–] Chorche 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

This will only lead to you eventually reading the Silmarillion, and putting your husband in his place with even more obscure Tolkien trivia.

#relationshipgoals

[–] samus12345 21 points 1 year ago

It can be hard to accept that something you're really into just isn't interesting to your spouse, but I think it's important to do so.

[–] TeaHands 7 points 1 year ago

It's for your own good. Trust him.

[–] EhEhraughn 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I had a friend like that with every comedy movie he liked. He'd just stare at you with a goofy grin prior to every part he thought was funny. He'd look over, grinning, just waiting to see your reaction. He's a great guy, it just made it real uncomfortable to watch a movie with him.

I’m assuming he'll make you watch it again, regardless of your enjoyment. Like, if you don’t love it, he'll say he didn’t explain enough or you missed something. If you do enjoy it, he'll say you won’t mind watching it again.

So, good luck.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

And you will get an explanation either way, each time deeper and longer than the previous… either you live or join the cult, no in between

[–] ChillPenguin 32 points 1 year ago (2 children)

My wife fell asleep the first time through. So this is a very real situation for me haha.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

My husband and I stood in line to watch each movie twice in the theater when they came out. And we've watched it all through on DVD multiple times.

We do have interests and hobbies that don't jive but LOTR is definitely one we share.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I fell asleep the first time, my wife didn't.

On her side, she was much more of a Tolkien nerd at the time, though I think I've surpassed her (an indictment of myself, I assure you).

For my part, I was burned out from classwork and did not experience anything from Moria to Amon Hen. Like, I didn't even remember that I fell asleep - or rather, waking up. So it wasn't until I saw it again that I realized I missed Galadriel and a whole lot else. This exacerbates my confusion about what's in the theatrical/extended, to say the least.

Begs the question what were your wrong reactions on first viewing?

Edit: OP, “Look, I’m sorry and I get that it’s sad and a real bad day for the Fellowship, but old people falling down just makes me laugh.”

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA 11 points 1 year ago

Making fun of Legoland every opportunity

[–] Got_Bent 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Unrelated but your comment reminds me of a time when my daughter was young.

There was some show on TV where a guy fell out of a tall building plummeting to his death (dramatized, not real).

My daughter watches this and screams, "wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

I about burst several internal organs laughing at that one.

[–] jopepa 5 points 1 year ago

That’s hilarious. If they released a Mystery Science Theater type of series with kids commentary I’d cash in all my pto binging all that unexpected nonsense.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets uncomfortable when someone starts spectating the audience. Yes, I’m watching the same movie. No, I don’t want to laugh or cry at you.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

My girlfriend has seen the trilogy many more times than me, she likes it on in the background while she works from home. I'll sit for a while to watch but it isn't like The Shawshank Redemption where I will sit down until the end every damn time.

Damn Andy I will see you down in Zaywatanejo

[–] RememberTheApollo_ 17 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Zihuatanejo, in case anyone wanted to know the actual spelling and that it’s a real place.

Shawshank Redemption, The Birdcage, and The Fifth Element are my 3 favorite movies that I will always actively watch when they're on, even if I own all three.

I’d never get any work done if it was on in the “background” at my house.

[–] iAvicenna 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Oh man, reminds me, I had watched the first movie in a cinema and one girl said after the movie ended "It is obvious that they made the ending like this so that they could shoot a sequel". I am glad your husband wasn't there.

What a wonderful image for sharing our deeply held passions with the people we care about most.

Fortunately for me, my wife is the bigger LotR nerd, so when it comes to the Silmarillion, this tends to be how she looks at me.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Only the second time? Weak.

This is a joke. I actually only watched through it for the first time this year, despite being more or less a fan of it since childhood.

[–] ickplant 7 points 1 year ago

Truth is, the information contained in this meme is several years old (but accurate). I've seen it thrice by now, and he wasn't nearly as focused on me the third time. So, it does get better.

[–] BilboBargains 10 points 1 year ago

I do this every time she drives a car.

[–] Bassman1805 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My wife and I have both watched all the movies several times, together and apart, and we still do this with our favorite scenes.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

One part that always makes us laugh is after "Fly, you fools" when there's no spoken audio but you can see/hear Pippin in slowmo going "Frew-dew."

[–] samus12345 7 points 1 year ago

I watched Return of the King with my wife and family when it came out. She wasn't impressed. I do have the extended edition, but I never got around to watching it by myself.
