!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

In an effort to try and be mindful of storage usage on instances I'm posting to, I'd prefer to host images externally and link to them.

Now that Imgur has turned into.. whatever it is now, anyone have any good recommendations for simple, quick image hosts?

The Fediverse has a solution already: pixelfed!

That's an instagram clone not an imgur clone. It doesn't really seem to be the drag, drop, and get a throwaway link style service imgur is.

Man, I'm just learning new stuff here almost by the minute!

Now I'm off to go explore this Pixelfed.

Are people volunteering their server space on pixelfed? Is that how it works?

[–] Smokeydope 3 points 2 years ago

Yes pretty much most fediverse instances are run by voulenteers on their own hardware time and dime. That is why donations are so important to keep these instances going. Storage space is not cheap and multimedia hosting requires a lot of it.

I tried it, it's not a suitable Imgur replacement unfortunately.

Just signed up on pixey.org. Thanks! :)

A Pixelfed instance, like https://pixel.tchncs.de

I have had a good experience with Post Images so far. The free accounts are more than enough space. And they provide a direct link to the image for posting.

I had a lot of trouble with this site, if I were to direct link to the image then it would be in low resolution and it says I have to link to the website instead of the image for full resolution.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Can someone explain what’s going on here? Hosting an image to Imgur and hyperlinking the Imgur link is not good for lemmy server storage?

I’ll fix my behavior asap. Just no clue

Or is it mostly the fact that pixel and the rest are decentralized

Using lemmys image hosting is not good for server storage. OP doesn't want to use imgur for a different reason i'm unaware of

[–] MothBookkeeper 17 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Imgur has gotten really obnoxious to use, since they're trying to turn it into a standalone social media platform.

[–] dditty 8 points 2 years ago

I think part of the issue with imgur is they decided to remove all their nsfw media to go public so all reddit posts linked to them were going to get broken.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

I’ve seen a lot of issues with Imgur links, Imgur also tries their hardest to not provide you with a direct image link, instead preferring you link to the Imgur page which is not ideal.

Just looking for a simple drag and drop image host that will give me a plain image URL. No frills needed.

You can still direct link Imgur pics using 3rd Party Apps (yeah I know) like ImgurViewer

[–] lung 7 points 2 years ago

I think it's going to be critical for Lemmy instances to use a third party image service for one simple reason: takedown requests

Basically, there's no way that small server admins can handle the volume of takedowns that comes to every service. Having that handled by something like Imgur is the only way I can see things shaking out. It'll still be hard

[–] Sprout4426 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

imgur is the absolute worst on mobile and no I don't want to use your shitty app to see an image. Stay as far away from it as you can.

The only reasonable alternatives are things that give you a direct link to image. I used pixhost a few times and it was fine but I'm happy to find alternatives.

[–] PillowTalk420 3 points 2 years ago

I've never had any issues using Imgur other than for some reason even a direct link to an image will take someone else I am sending the URL to to a framed page instead of directly to the image.

You could try Pixelfed. Not tried it myself yet.

[–] davidgro 1 points 2 years ago

A lot of people on lemmynsfw are using catbox.moe or postimg.cc (I've tried neither one from the posting side)

imgchest works great for porn.
