Summary

Mexico is waiting for a new response from Google regarding its mapping service's use of "Gulf of America" in the U.S., while displaying "Gulf of Mexico" in Mexico.

President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that Google will face a lawsuit if it doesn’t restore the original name, arguing it violates Mexico’s sovereignty over 49% of the Gulf. The U.N. also recognizes the historic name.

Google defended its policy, saying it followed longstanding mapping practices after Trump’s renaming declaration amidst rising tensions between Mexico and the U.S.

The issue has also sparked press freedom concerns in the U.S.

Why would a private business be in charge of the world maps? Fuck google and fuck naziland (formely usa on my personnal map), just don't use their stupid things.

For most of history private businesses were in charge of maps. They’d put fake towns and islands on them as a form of copy protection.

One thing humans don’t do is change, so get used to this stupidity continuing.

Mexico and Canada should put a tariff on Google ad buys.

Given the capitulation to President Musk, I assume the answer will be poop emoji

Mexico should just ban Google from operating in Mexico. I’m sure they would capitulate then.

Isn't name change only for USA? Other countries still use Gulf of Mexico unless they too decide to change it for whatever reasons. Also why are people not talking about (Persian Gulf/Arabian Gulf) or (Sea of Japan/East sea)

Jot defending Trump but this thing is chaotic neutral thing he did, there are bigger issues he did.

I just checked for Croatia too, yeah it's messed up.

The implication behind it is that the US owns the Gulf, and nobody wants this change, especially Americans. It's chaotic malicious, along the lines of claiming ownership over the Panama Canal (which he also did) and Greenland (did that one, too).

Technically USA owns Mexican gulf, parts of it. The same way Mexico owns other parts of gulf.

Yes, but the internationally recognized name is the Gulf of Mexico. It has that history behind it that even Americans agree with. Trump might as well have decreed that it should be called the Gulf of Trump and that the state of New Mexico is now South Colorado.

My state is trying to rename our tallest mountain Trump Mountain. I wish I was kidding.
