I am logged in to lemmy.ml and it seems to run just fine as of now.

I got "bad gateway" a little while ago from my browser bookmark, but I just figured it was temporarily down and didn't think anything of it.

Chiming in from lemmy.ml here

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

This happens very often here. lemmy.ml isn't reliable and the performance is very bad.

I believe the top level domain, the .ML was reclaimed by the country of Mali recently, who own it. It was just bad luck.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

No, it didn’t. Lemmy.ml is running just fine.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Is that what the ML means? I thought that it meant Machine Learning.

All two letter domains are for countries.

Even .tv which is Tuvalu

I thought it was for motherland lol with the amount of tankies

If that's the case, I figured it was "Marxist-Leninist", which is what most of them prefer to describe themselves as.

Reminds me of the person who said that lemmy was communist because the groups were called communities

@blamethepeacock See? It does stand for something, since it clearly isn't Mali.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why would Lemmy feel the need to represent a foreign country?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@blamethepeacock No response?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@blamethepeacock All I'm looking for is a conversation.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You're not just looking for conversation.

Unless you get a response from the site admins, anyone's answer is pure speculation. No one is going to be able to say, definitively, why .ml was chosen, except the site admins.

My theory is: .ml domains used to be offered for free. So they made lemmy.ml for free, as it was just a toy project. Then, they upgraded to the paid .ml domain (which is how they managed to avoid the recent free .ml purge).

The "its Marxism-Leninism" could be true, but unless you get an answer from a site admin, everyone asserting that it's true is talking out of their ass. They don't know any more than you or I know.

Tankies? Is that a reference?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

@favrion @1stTime4MeInMCU tankies is derogatory term of communists who regardless of reality excuse everything that authoritarian governments do. It was coined to describe Stalinists who defended USSR rolling in tanks on Hungary in 1958. They're the mirror image of MAGA cultists who will be the first to defend Trump when he inevitably goes ahead and shoots someone in the middle of 5th Ave.

My 1st interaction with a tankie was a Canadian youtuber who made videos defending North Korea, not satire

What do you mean it disappeared from your list?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I didn't see it on my drop-down list.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You're posting from it so it seems to be working

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The key word is "had."
