Not broken.

Slavery is still legal (via the 13th amendment loophole). Just as the founding fathers intended.

I don't know if it's because I'm British, but I always assumed that America is the way it is because we shipped a bunch of over-zealous loons over there that we didn't really want here.

Part of me isn't surprised as to how things are turning out.

What's Britain's excuse then?

Rome shipped their overzealous loons there.

they never developed a trade good better than wool and had to resort to violence just so they could get some nutmeg

Classism and stupidity.

A system designed to balance the needs of the people with the excesses of the aristocracy ended up creating greater wealth inequality than pre-revolution France.

It’s hard to overstate how badly the American Experiment has gone off track for the last four plus decades. Destroying the education system paved the way for it all.

The first generation of Americans read newspapers that were written at what would now be a college reading level. Now the average American is so bombarded by misinformation and lacking in critical thinking that they’ll believe anything.

The system started with slavery, but counting 3/5 of each slave as part of the population for the benefit of that state's slave owning white landowners. Then we fucked over the native people repeatedly for centuries. We just pretended to like immigrants for a while to abuse their cheap labor. The glory days post WWII were just for middle class whites.

The country has been fucked up since the founding.

Thank you.

I'm fucking disgusted that we're at a place where it's still normal to celebrate these old white degenerate slave owning religious fucks that only had freedom because they took it violently. THEIR hard earned freedom, at no cost to themselves other than time and money. Bring your bitches and slaves, clear out the savages, import subhuman livetock to do the work and suffering for you and, BOOM! You've got white feeedom, and it's finger lickin' good.

It was a business then just like now. These were the CEOs of their time who made this beautiful place into a playground for white colonists (dangerous fucking immigrants) like so much of the world. Their white relatives are still reaping the benefits like a motherfucker, consciously oblivious that blacks and others are still in slavery. Out of sight out of mind let's go to Starbucks. My white relatives owned hundreds of acres up until I was a teenager. I was proud of that until I grew up and understood why they had that land in the first place.

And it's hard to overstate that the post WW2 golden age came as a result as the rest of the entire world being devastated by war, while the US industry was absolutely untouched and immediately ready to pivot from war time demand to supplying the world.

That ain't gonna happen again.

It seems like its easier and more straightforward, and profitable, for the state to just take pay to heed the interests of private industry, as opposed to the complex nature of properly managing and answering to the citizenry as a whole, or even feigning interest in their well-being.

Though it does feel like the founders did get those checks and balances in there (or was that later?) or we'd be more fucked than we already are. And our form of representative republic hasn't always been beyond salvaging. But since the last corporate buyout and with the propaganda proliferated by the internet I feel hard-pressed to challenge it. What will get us out of this one? Education was always key, and the aristocracy was always going to fuck us on that one.

When you leave for two centuries and leave the keys to the car and all the money to one bratty teenaged son and give nothing else to the eight other younger children in the house and wonder why there's a huge party with strangers, the house is trashed and on fire, the car's gone and the eight younger siblings are on the lawn eating from the trashcan.
