Speaking earlier on Friday in response to Trump’s Thursday assertion that he was ready to hit Canada with tariffs tomorrow, Trudeau said Canada “won’t relent until tariffs are removed,” but conceded the country could be in for hard times.

So "Nothing Canada can do to prevent tariffs" is the same as saying "I'm doing this for absolutely no reason".

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 24 points 1 month ago

cruelty is the point

[–] T00l_shed 94 points 1 month ago (3 children)

[–] DaddleDew 74 points 1 month ago (4 children)

As a Canadian I fail to see how this will ever make me want to join the US.

Canada will outlive Trump.

Technically there is a land border betweenen the EU and Canada, so makes sense.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Can we sell ourselves to Denmark and join Greenland?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Speaking as a random Dane, I'm into it and willing to pay up to $20 for Canada as a (very) early Christmas present for Greenland.

Look at Mr. Moneybags here!

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

I'm ready for Danelaw 2.0!

[–] marcos 1 points 1 month ago

You are probably going to fare better by annexing New York.

Or, maybe you can do both.

What do you have against incompetent brutally cruel fascist oligarchies?

[–] T00l_shed 5 points 1 month ago

You said it!

[–] peregrin5@lemm.ee 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Can you take the coastal states? Particularly the west coast? We're tired of being part of America.

[–] Phil_in_here@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 month ago

As a Canadian, 100% would embrace the west coast and New England.

We can call it Americanada and it would be awesome.

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

As a Canadian I can't see how annexing Canada will make America better? Also, lotssa luck with the guerilla warfare when your opposition is the same colour and speaks the same language.

[–] joyjoy@lemm.ee 4 points 1 month ago

"You're not making ~~Christianity~~ America better. You're just making ~~Rock & Roll~~ Canada worse."

[–] DaddleDew 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

They'll use all sort of dirty tricks just like the Gestapo did, like making you say the letter "Z", or making you spell the word "colour".

[–] Rooskie91@discuss.online 22 points 1 month ago

It's the worst timeline alright.

[–] beliquititious@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Does he not realize if Canada becomes a state a republican could never hold the presidency again? Right wing canadians are further left than american Democrats.

[–] Soup 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Literally we have Trump supporters here and constantly vote for obviously corrupt people. Alberta and Ontario being clear, loud examples.

So, no, I’m glad it makes you feel good and all but that is a profoundly stupid thing to say and I don’t want to get dragged into your not-seeing-the-obvious thank you very much.

[–] beliquititious@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I realized shortly after posting that comment there would be a low chance that canada would be a state. It'd probably be more like Puerto Rico, pay taxes, but not vote for anything that matters outside of the territory.

I was aware of the maga nuts in Canada, I didn't realize they had enough votes to actually matter though. Plus y'all burned down the white house once, I'm sure even the craziest canadian would be made about losing their sovereignty. Surely?

[–] Soup 2 points 1 month ago

You underestimate how stupid conservatives are, then. We’re about to vote in a Conservative government because our mediocre centrist has fallen apart and despite having a very valid third option with a left-but-not-radically-so party we refuse to acknowledge that. That white house thing happened two-hundred years ago, the last Conservative PM we had, Stephen Harper, did nothing but raise the deficit and be a little bitch and yet our moronic, brain-dead conservatives keep acting like he was some big strong tough boy. Conservatives in Alberta just recently decided that CO2 isn’t a pollutant because it made them feel better.

We are stupid up here, like the U.S.-lite, and our individuality is in tatters. We’re still better off that that shithole by a long way but the bar is also in hell, so.

[–] T00l_shed 1 points 1 month ago

They still love voting against their best interests though, so maybe they would join in. Also who's to say canada would get to vote.

[–] LovableSidekick 53 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

MAGA: We'll tax ourselves when we buy Canadian goods until Canada begs for mercy!

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 49 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I know of ONE thing that could be done..

[–] marcos 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well, not in Canada. Or at least not to prevent the tariffs.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You know the old saying: dead billionaires impose no tariffs 🤷

[–] marcos 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Killing Canadian billionaires won't make the tariffs go away.

It may or may not bring a lot of interesting results. But if you want to change the tariffs, you can't do it in Canada.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 month ago

Killing Canadian billionaires won't make the tariffs go away.

I wasn't referring to Canadian billionaires. I'd be more specific but I'm probably already dancing in banhammer area..

if you want to change the tariffs, you can't do it in Canada.

Unless a certain American billionaire comes to visit..

[–] HappySkullsplitter 33 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I already bought 5,000 gallons of maple syrup to get me through the year

[–] Frozengyro 17 points 1 month ago (3 children)

That's 91 years worth of food assuming 2000 calories a day.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

assuming 2000 calories a day.

That's the recommended intake for an adult woman of average weight and activity level. Burly lumberjacks from Québec named Gordon need MUCH more than that.

[–] Diplomjodler3 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

In reality, Gordon is a barista, though.

[–] Kaput 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

In Kanata. But he does go to Hull for authentic poutine once in a while.

Much love, person who knows Ottawa-Gatineau place names.

[–] DigitalNirvana@lemm.ee 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Sorry, So, you’re not Canadian, then eh?

[–] hOrni 2 points 1 month ago

Ok. How much would it cost per day?

[–] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

I'm on my last litre, but it's not too long before sugar season starts up again.

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 month ago
[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Hey, Canada. Trump has the puck.

Obviously, fentanyl is an excuse.

They're closing the borders because of their trade deficits. They think it will stimulate production within the US.

[–] Pollo_Jack 7 points 1 month ago

Well yeah, the goal is to crash the american economy for Russia and christo facist control. Tech billionaires will battle it out with the christos for ultimate control.

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 7 points 1 month ago

Finally, lower egg prices!

[–] MapleEngineer 1 points 1 month ago

If you are a non-Trump voter in a red state, especially if you work for the flagship company or industry in that state, I would like to apologize on behalf of all Canadians for what our government is about to do. We don't want to do it but it is the only way to deal with a bully.
