Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in [email protected]. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @[email protected], @[email protected], or @[email protected].

Ownership of Greenland is not about the US, but about the protection of the entire free world - and Denmark cannot provide that, says Donald Trump.

This has some strong "Her short skirt forced me to rape her" vibes

[–] CitizenKong 86 points 4 days ago

I mean what do you expect from a rapist?

This has some strong Mafia vibes.

Looks like conventional politicians don't know how to deal with trump.

You don't say "no". You say "I'll trade it for California".

[–] P1nkman 15 points 4 days ago

We'll gladly take California!

[–] [email protected] 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, but Denmark then also needs to pay for the border wall around California!!!1111oneeleven

[–] AngryCommieKender 17 points 4 days ago

Californian here, we can pay for that with all the federal taxes we will be saving.

[–] Evotech 5 points 4 days ago

Yeah, trump only responds well to force

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

Europeans had massive issues with Trump last time around already. But iirc, the Korean and Japanese governments were on good terms. Not sure whether there might be a lesson there.

You mean the convicted felon Rapist manchild known for acting like a child is..... Acting like a child?

I'm so glad 25% of the population got to destroy the country because they can't handle LGBT people and immigrants existing.

No hard feelings if you want to build a wall around the US, Republicans here seem to think those are foolproof.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago

Maybe the unification wasn't such a good idea after all.

Russia gets Donesk, otherwise it is an "unfriendly act" from Ukraine, says Putin.

That sounds exactly as stupid.

[–] eran_morad 9 points 4 days ago

That’s precisely the point of all this.

[–] [email protected] 34 points 4 days ago

I'd say it's more of an unfriendly act when a friend comes and demands to get your things than if an enemy does

[–] [email protected] 36 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Has anyone seen reactions to this from people who say that Ukraine should just give Putin what he wants? Because I haven't and I'm curious.

Greenland is culturally part of the US sphere, as can be seen by the lack of trains. The hyper aggressive EU, the former global colonialist are working hard to develop a new colony in the Americas. Just look at the former German foreign minister, who is calling for conquering Canada. Washington's security is at risk, so naturally they are going to nuke the entire world. What else are they going to do? /s

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

Hey I'll have you know I live within walking distance of TWO tracks.

Just don't ask me how close the nearest passenger rail is....

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

Just look at the former German foreign minister, who is calling for conquering Canada.

Οƒ Gabriel is at it again.

I am sure we can come to a deal where the US extends the territorial defense of Greenland, they already have bases and troops there.

US companies are also very welcome to invest in mining operations, if they think it's profitable.

This is about pounding your chest and looking strong, treating the world as a map painter strategy game.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

But evil Greenlanders don't allow virtuous oil companies to ruin their environment to get the oil. Someone needs to liberate all that oil /s

[–] [email protected] 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

where the US extends the territorial defense of Greenland, they already have bases and troops there.

They already do this, as you've acknowledged yourself

US companies are also very welcome to invest in mining operations, if they think it’s profitable.

I guess this was already possible in Denmark, but according to Danish Laws and Social Standards

So why do you want to negotiate with him?

[–] [email protected] 16 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I don't. But I wouldn't rule out that they simply decide to just take possession of Greenland without asking.

The US were our closest ally, so this Greenland-thing is baffling. It's like someone saying they want free access to your house or else and they already have a key.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 4 days ago (1 children)

By not reacting with a united front when he first mentioned the idea of invasion, Europe normalised threats of war as a negotiating tactic.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Perhaps there is a deal to be made, the US can have Greenland and they in turn give them the same area but on their main land.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 4 days ago

I volunteer wholeheartedly to live in the state given to Denmark! Maybe trump will want to get rid of a blue state...

[–] [email protected] 21 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Maybe Denmark should offer Greenland in exchange for Florida.

And when he then retorts, foaming at the mouth and furious, why on earth he should exchange an important part of his great country in such a horse-trade, they end the conversation with a simple "Exactly."

[–] [email protected] 16 points 4 days ago (4 children)

It's too risky. He might agree to it.

Let's suggest it's Vermont and New Hampshire.

[–] Randelung 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

On the one hand, you don't want to be stuck with Florida. On the other, those are usually red electoral votes...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

They get Disneyland for free!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago

You know where his stupid Mar-a-Lago is? Even he should realise that this would put his tacky temple into Denmark.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

Vermonter here. I’ll take socialized medicine yes please! Trade me!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

Whoawhoawhoa...wait, actually no, I'm down.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Why do we need Greenland? Is it because they make cheap eggs? Is that it? They are a magical island that has chickens who lay golden eggs every 5 minutes and eggs cost only $0.13/dozen. Is that it? Is it? IS it? IS IT!!!!! . . . I didn't fucking think so.

[–] AngryCommieKender 5 points 4 days ago

They do have a lot of cheap eggs, but not of the chicken variety. Cod, halibut, shrimp, crab, and prawn eggs should all be plentiful though.

In some centuries, there will be games like Donald 3 making fun of the absurdity of dying in/for/because-of the Arctic over thawing glaciers.
