(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in [email protected]. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @[email protected], @[email protected], or @[email protected].

Yes.

But first we need to deal with the traitors Orban and Fico.

Then we need to establish our own defence capabilities and reduce the dependencies on US companies for digital capabilities. (Get rid of Windows and US companies in the entire public sector.) Buy European, this will also Support our Economy.

Thirdly we should integrate closer with other countries also fucked over by Trump, like Canada

EDIT: Fourth - High Tariffs for all countries which don't adhere roughly to our environmental and social Standards. To avoid a Race to the bottom with globalisation. Free Trade with everyone else

[–] [email protected] 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I'd say the second step is to once and for all deal with the Russian thread. If Russia dies (metaphorically), the populists in the EU die with it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

They have Nukes. How do you want to "Deal with them once and for all" ?

Economic Sanctions? We are already doing it Direct Attack on their own territory (not Ukraine)? Seems Like a stupid Idea

Supporting Independence Movements through our Secret Services? Could Work, but you have to be careful, that No nutjobs in the newer smaller States end Up with the Nukes. I mean that's what He is doing, but explicitly supporting the Nutjobs

Doing a Hitjob on Putler? Same Risks AS the last point

Just use conventional weaponry to flatten Moscow and st Petersburg. Russia is those two cities if they fall the country disintergrates with them. Either way when you're dealing with the Russians, anything less than taking out your dick and beating them to death with it won't be respected.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 53 minutes ago* (last edited 8 minutes ago)

They have an Automatic system which launches Nukes If you flatten Moscow. That's a very stupid idea

Just go full in on the occupied territories

Remember, too, that Canada has a sea border with France and a land border with Denmark. We're basically the Netherlands. Let's all be friends!

[–] [email protected] 10 points 23 hours ago

I don't know if you wanna do that. PP is probably going to start eating Canada within the next election cycle, in October. Though the status of France (National Rally), Germany (AfD), Italy, Hungary, and the UK (Nigel Farage is up to shit) worries me a lot. Short term (20 years), I think we are going to see many of our friends and allies regressing until we either slowly beat them back, or have a giant world war.

We should all support each other, but also be clear-eyed that times of plenty and peace might be temporarily behind us because so many people are bored.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 22 hours ago

Only when you let go of Poutine.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 day ago

But first we need to deal with the traitors Orban and Fico.

Yea, that would be great. Instead it is becoming a central European triangle of annoyance with the addition of Kickl.

Please do we need to support one another!

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Please take us with you.

We can start small; let us into Eurovision. You let Austrailia in - well, they're basically antipodous to us, so give Canada a go too.

After that, let's add some more spice. Maybe some trade agreements, or study-abroad programmes for exchange students. Then we can really turn up the heat, if you catch my drift.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 23 hours ago

Ooh, that would be nice! Kick out Israel while we're at it.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago

Okay, we let you into Eurovision, you ship us poutine. This could definitely work.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

OrbΓ‘n is already happening, there is hope. He is steadily polling in the minority.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 15 hours ago

I believe it when I See it. He does play dirty

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

I will... Vote on you

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 day ago

Not in particular. We need to be more self sufficient in general.

[–] [email protected] 34 points 1 day ago

Well, clickbait title obviously, but the EU will have little choice but to treat US based social media similar to how TikTok is viewed in the US, i.e. operated by a potentially hostile actor.

This is IMHO long overdue, but it comes with the inevitable splintering of public opinion space a bit similar to how there is little overlap with the Chinese or Russian one (but for those the main reason was language barrier).

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yes.

The re-election of Trump proved they are no longer leaders of the free world. That mantle must be taken up by the EU now.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

We thought it was already taken up by Germany, but then that regime changed a bit.

But yeah -- the EU itself is now the leadership.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (1 children)

Leaders of the free world

The most oppressive regime and the ex colonial super powers leading the "free world". Sure pal.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Who is the most oppressive regime?

[–] asdfasdfasdf 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Tankies live in vacuum chambers stronger than the ones their heroes put dissidents in.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Step foot outside of the colonial empire and you will find no echo chamber is stronger than the liberal one.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 hours ago

I live in Turkey so I think I am one step above that

[–] [email protected] -3 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

The USA of course. Ask south America, Africa, the Middle East and south Asia. Look at the modern day Holocaust being committed by the US.

[–] devfuuu 3 points 19 hours ago

We can hope that someone will go there and deliver some freedom. Hopefully they have some oil around too.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 day ago

As an American who never voted for the felon, yes. It's time for America to die.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago

Not America, just the USA

[–] Majorllama 10 points 1 day ago

I say go for it. Let's see who's thinking about their ex more in a few years.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

EU can't even manage Orban, so why would one expect a viable approach to American fascist oligarchy?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

The Russian regime in the US is actively trying to push the EU away so that both the US and EU are weaker.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Please don't. We need all the help we can get.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Your country is actively attacking our democracies and is threatening war over an European oversea territory.

We need all the help we can get.

Help with what? We cannot resist for you. That is something you have to do yourself outside of social media.

[–] daddy32 10 points 23 hours ago

Yeah. I thought that after election, the insane clown president would screw Europe by stoping support for Ukraine and supporting the russian bear instead. I didn't, in my darkest dreams expect him to actually threaten to attack his allies and let his dog fund the actual fascists in Europe, undermining the stability in the classic russian mixed warfare style.

[–] AlijahTheMediocre 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Gotta help ourselves first. Why should they give aid for a fight we are unwilling to wage?

I hope that this is just a temporary setback in the long term. Europe and North America's relationship is a unique one that would be terrible to loose.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't blame any country that doesn't want to help us, we've been screwing over other countries for a long time. We need to fix our shit here before we reenter the global stage. We need to start producing quality things and people again, we need to have a more humanitarian posture on the world strange. Unfortunately, very few currently aligned with the power structure here is on board with that, so they need to go as well.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I'm pinning my hopes on Gen-Z. Boomers are dying, us Gen-X were too influenced my Boomers, Millenials... well, I really hope Gen-Z has their collective shit together by the time they're running things.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Truth be told, I don't think we have time to wait for gen z to come of age. I don't think we even have 10 years before shit gets hairy here.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I personally think it's too late, but I get jumped on for being a "doomer," so I try to stay outwardly optimistic.

But, yeah: we're doomed.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 19 hours ago

I mean, I don't think we're all gonna die, but I do think life will radically change in a less than favorable direction, and some people may die at the hands of assholes.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You mean you need tariffs and want to get rid of Greenland?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

I mean Elizabeth May was shooting too low by offering that Canada take Washington, Oregon, and California. I was offended! Why not Minnesota?? We share a border and a Great Lake, and most of Canada's population already lives South of Minneapolis/St. Paul! Why weren't we invited?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Maybe @[email protected] is speaking on behalf of America.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 hours ago

I certainly was!

Any EU citizens want to swap passports with me?

[–] [email protected] -2 points 1 day ago

Is it time to fuck off with YouTube "jOuRnALisM"?
