/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

But will stardate 48315.6 be the year of the Linux desktop

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Probably still deciding X vs Wayland.

[–] marcos 9 points 2 weeks ago

There's nothing to decide. Wayland is the way of the future, and Enterprise will definitively upgrade to it some time before sd. 48681, as soon as they get some free time to do it!

[–] TheGrandNagus 5 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

Mate, even Debian moved to Wayland as default in 2019.

The debate between X and Wayland is over

I just noticed... He had the solution to that wraith possession all the time, he just refused to use it.

"One of these days, Keiko...straight to the buffer."

[–] FlyingSquid 14 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I have no idea why I put so much work into this.

Edit: Damn it, I'm making this it's own post because I'm proud of it...

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 weeks ago

"Keiko, I know you love Linux. But the Cardassians actually ported SELinux onto Slackware. Onto Slackware! The whole station is just a pile of unzipped files compiled with randomized build flags and whatever compiler they had lying around, then secured in a manner designed exclusively to create suffering!"

Why this, instead of the classic rm -rf? Curious to learn

[–] PlasticExistence 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That would also work just fine, but I thought it was slightly funnier to specify that he would transport Keiko into null space for her joke

Can't believe it's 48291.9 and Ubuntu is still pushing Snaps smh

[–] Burninator05 13 points 2 weeks ago

Riker laughed at the joke. That's why he gets to spend Valentines Day with the O'Brien family and Miles is stuck working.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Holy shit this meme format. Can we get a blank one of this? Thanks!

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver 20 points 2 weeks ago

I stole this meme from elsewhere, but I was able to find the template!

Here ya go:

Walking dad meme reference

The enterprise runs on PonyOS because it's magical.

[–] FlyingSquid 5 points 2 weeks ago

Okay, I'm not down with the Brony hate, but that is crossing a line!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

We can only imagine a fraction of what must be running through his head at that point...

You know, even with the super advanced tech of Star Trek, I still think I'd want a bit more between me and death than an energy barrier. I don't trust technology. I like redundancy.

I get the same feeling when I see SpaceX's Starship do the "flip and burn" landing maneuver.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

The redundancy is the door.

But yeah, they must have tremendous amounts of faith ^of^ ^the^ ^heart^ to have the control console for that way out in the open instead of a separate control room.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

They leave that thing open when they don't need to all the time, though.

The energy barrier is the redundancy! Without it, the transporter is just a replicator 😉

And the wine is made of synthohol.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago

Ironically, he then pushed her out of a window on the enterprise ; into space : by compiling from source.

Apple Inc.™ has joined the chat

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver 8 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Is it sacrilegious to say that the Enterprise D exterior looks like something designed by Apple?

[–] negativenull 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)
[–] TheGrandNagus 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Wow, the Enterprise systemD

[–] negativenull 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And time, hostname, power settings...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Okay I see your outside, and raise you a beige and black bridge:-)

Edit: oh, I missed "exterior", but even there...:

I would guess that like flip-up cellphones followed communicators, and smartphones perhaps followed tricorders, and tablets definitely followed... ah, tablets:-), people saw Star Trek and then built those things that looked so damn cool. Life imitates art, or something.

Apple is not linux, it's using BSD as it's bones, but thankfully can leverage GNU binaries like linux
