!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

MODERATORS

I gather some server is for some arcane reason censoring naughty words to protect our delicate sensibilities. Is it on my end, on lemmy.ml? Is it the server people are posting from? Is it something happening in the federation? Is it the Romulans?

First, always start by reading the public modlog. Mod logs are public.

Next: how about an example? I'm not seeing what you describe, so I'd really appreciate a reference (link) to whatever it is you are describing.

[–] over_clox 12 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Not OP, but how does one read the 'modlog' on mobile?

[–] macarthur_park 12 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Assuming you’re using a browser, on the main community page, expand the sidebar. The modlog is linked at the bottom, just above the list of mods. Here’s the modlog for /c/nostupidquestions

[–] over_clox 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How the hell do you 'expand the sidebar?'

I don't totally get this user interface. Not for lack of trying, more for lack of I don't see what you're saying...

[–] macarthur_park 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Go to the /c/nostupidquestions page in a browser: https://lemmy.world/c/nostupidquestions

Near the top left, just under the community name is a label that says “Sidebar” with a little plus symbol to the right of it. Click this an it expands out, listing the community rules and a bunch of other info. At the very bottom of the expanded region is the list of mods. Just above that is a link labeled “Modlog”.

If you are using a mobile app or the mobile version of the site (m.lemmy.world) then you may not be able to do this.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn't work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: [email protected]

[–] over_clox 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And here's my message from the Jerboa app for Lemmy on Android.

I'm on the toilet right now, you expect me to drag my laptop in here?

[–] awderon 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The modlog seems also good on mobile browsers.

[–] over_clox 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Please explain, how's that work?

What tap? What do?

I'm not exactly stupid, just new to this service..

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

On the standard Lemmy UI on Android if you click the site logo, top left, you should then see a sidebar button that contains the modlog link.

[–] krayj 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If your chosen mobile app doesn't offer the feature, then you can't. Every app that does offer the feature does it differently, so it's impossible for me to give you a single guidance that works on every mobile app.

I assume you do have access to a web browser on mobile though, so open your web browser, navigate to the instance hosting the community and/or your own home instance, and then depending on the layout used by your device the modlog will be a clickable link in the sidebar to the right, or will appear as a link near the bottom of the page after scrolling to the bottom.

[–] over_clox 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've actually found it now on the Jerboa app, but thank you and everyone else for the advice.

New platform to me, still learning, but hey I'm enjoying it so far anyways 👍

[–] krayj 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I had to quit using jerboa weeks ago (too unstable) and switched to something different. Glad you found it. The public modlog is awesome. It's one of the significant and intentional differences from reddit (which does not expose moderation activity to users). Having the modlog be public forces transparency and accountability, which is refreshing.

[–] over_clox 2 points 1 year ago

Huh, I'll admit Jerboa does have its moments of hiccups, but I haven't found any significant issues with it so far that I couldn't attribute to a lemmy.world temporary server issue. 🤷‍♂️

If you use Liftoff (which I largely recommend!) then you have to open the community or instance that you are interested in, and on the "about" tab (it shows the sidebar) there is a "modlog" button at the bottom, which if you click you'll see the modlog for that community or instance.

You can open the main page of a community by clicking on it's name when you see it (like in the header of a post), or by searching.
For opening the instance main page you basically click on the instance name until you see it. Most of the times it will get you there directly, but sometimes you'll need to find and click the instance name once more.
Or you can open either from a search menu, of course.

In a few threads now where someone typed an expletive, the post gets censored and it just says removed where the word should've been.

I'm trying to link to a comment, but when I check the link, it keeps pointing to my response to them. Seems like some other lemmy quirk, but maybe it'll work for you

In another post, someone tried to say "resting removed face" but it came out "resting removed face"

edit: well that's awkward, when I tried to write b i t c h, it did it to my comment here. So it is a lemmy.ml thing?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Lemmy has a slur filter regex. In case you're curious, you can see an instance's regex using this url (replacing the domain as needed):

https://lemmy.ml/api/v3/site

CTRL+F "slur_filter"

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Huh, there are some filtered slurs in there I've never heard of before! I guess this probably isn't the place to ask to whom they apply and how, though. Still, the list isn't as long as I expected, and doesn't seem to apply to profanity so much as just offensive slurs. I feel like the "b-word" is a little bit of a stretch, but I can appreciate the intent there.

Thanks for giving the best answer here!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This filter was very controversial, especially because at first it was hardcoded into Lemmy itself, and the devs initially were insistent in keeping it that way. Fortunately they eventually allowed it to be configurable by instance, which is a much more sensible approach. Especially considering other languages and even some english variants. And while most people like you and me appreciate the intent, many are still unsure if this is a good approach to fight the problem. It does seem hard to avoid a lot of silly false positives. I remember someone mentioning being really confused by this "Sremovedew Valley" mentioned everywhere, until they realized it was just Stardew Valley being mangled by the filter.

[–] rarkgrames 3 points 1 year ago

It’s the clbuttic problem, also known as the Scunthorpe problem.

A lot of people use slurs like "narcissist" without thinking, and won't go to the effort of bypassing a filter. In that case the advantage is it gets people to think about their actions. I am perfectly happy with a system where moderates don't use slurs and reactionaries can, because it allows us to educate the moderates while banning the reactionaries.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The only one I didn't recognize was the mud + slime one (apparently it's a derogatory corruption of "muslim"). The rest are relatively common/well known.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Well, that's a nice place to go see a list of slurs.

I didn't see cracker or honkey on the list. Maybe that's punching up. What about redneck?

[–] rarkgrames 7 points 1 year ago

WhipperSnapper, you are fined one credit for a violation of the verbal morality code!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

It's 100% because you're registered on lemmy.ml

I'm not seeing that happening on any posts.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

it does it to your password too, see:

I see hunter2

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

hunte.... wait a minute

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

This is not something mods can do. They can only remove posts entirely, not censor or edit them.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Server you're on will censor words from a list maintained by your admin

[–] Deestan 3 points 1 year ago

It's a conspiracy to cover up the truth about the Scunthorpe assassination attempt where Herbert Cockburn was given a poisoned shitake by mr Callahan from Sussex.

[–] brygphilomena 8 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Lemmy.ml does censor certain words. Like female dogs, or bitches. B. I. T. C. H.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

It's a bit unintuitive what happens if I say "bitch" from another instance 🤔

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Censorship is pretty on par with a tankie instance lol

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

You don't have to be a tankie to censor things. We can't have people spreading nazi propaganda or saying racial slurs. You wanna become another platform like Voat?

[–] HardlightCereal -4 points 1 year ago

I hope they start cracking down on the slurs narcissist and cult. It's tricky because those two are legitimate words inside the community, but people have lately taken to using them as pejoratives.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

I blame Romulans. They just can't stay on their side of the Neutral Zone.
