Summary

Two weeks after his 2024 election victory, Donald Trump has yet to sign key transition agreements with the Biden administration and the General Services Administration (GSA), delaying security clearances, briefings, and resources for his incoming team.

The agreements include an ethics pledge aimed at preventing conflicts of interest, which Trump reportedly opposes.

Democrats, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, have criticized Trump for potentially violating federal law.

Despite the holdup, Trump is moving forward with Cabinet appointments, though his pick for attorney general, Matt Gaetz, withdrew amid ethics investigations.

You know that if it was an incoming democrat president taking over for a republican president, they'd be pulling the "oops you missed the deadline to turn in your paperwork, looks like we gotta give it to the runner-up" routine.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

looks like we gotta give it to the runner-up

These documents are not related to Trump becoming president, but related to him receiving briefings and stuff prior to taking office as he is the president elect.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 weeks ago

Not like they've ever let the truth stop them before

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 weeks ago

They won't have his coloring book versions of the briefings so he isn't interested lol

[–] WoahWoah 2 points 3 weeks ago

They have no effect on whether he assumes power.

He doesn't have to. It's not a legal obligation, it's a "norm." Elizabeth Warren is incorrect. She may have helped write it, but she seems to not understand it. I imagine that's why her accusation is so vague. It violates no laws to refuse to sign, and that's the legal interpretation before factoring in the new presidential immunity decision. He is vested with the full power of the executive when he is sworn in whether he signs the transfer agreements or not.

They won't even try prosecuting him for his alleged treasonous behavior at this point. The idea they're going to try to make a legal case out of a paperwork violation is pure fantasy for, like, six different reasons.

America. Where norms and customs are confused as being laws and the rigor in application of laws depends on whether you are a politician or are connected to one.

Yeah, I grew up learning how other countries weren't as free and were more corrupt and in retrospect it was all fucking projection. This country is rotten to the fucking core.

[–] affiliate 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

it is pure fantasy, but it aligns perfectly with the platonic ideal of dnc fantasies. the idea that if we can catch him messing up some paperwork, then we’ll finally have him dead to rights.

[–] WoahWoah 1 points 3 weeks ago

I can't argue with that lol

Since 2016 the Dems have deluded themselves into thinking they can throw the book at those who break the rules while the Republicans have been hard at work making sure the rules mean fuck all when used against them.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 3 weeks ago

I'm starting to think the plan is never to sign. For those unaware all this does is get him and his team access to various briefings to bring them up to speed on where things are currently at. Y'know, minimize the chaos inherent in changing governments.

But Trump loves chaos. He loves to feel like he's moving fast and breaking things. And most importantly, he loves having enemies.

What will actually happen here is that Biden will just give up and give Trump the briefings anyway (which he will ignore, or fail to turn to for). But if the Dems do dig their heels in, Trump will announce that they're trying to block him from taking office. It'll the be the start of what is almost certainly a four year project (and, to be clear, this is going to happen either way); blaming every screw up on "Democrat insiders" working to undermine them from within the government. This insidious enemy will be everywhere and anywhere, constantly working to disrupt all their beautifully laid plans.

They should have made it a law to be required to sign it. There are a lot of norms that should have been made into law but Congress sat on their thumbs on that for the last four years.

[–] BetaDoggo_ 14 points 3 weeks ago

It required a death in office for them to mandate term limits, there's no way they'll ever ratify simple procedure.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago

A requirement to assume a major office a person has been elected to should be part of the constitution. Otherwise Biden would not have been in power for sure, perhaps not even Obama.

[–] hombre_fundido 29 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Then don't transition power. Tell them they get nothing until they sign it. It was Trump's law in the first place.

[–] WoahWoah 24 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

It's not a law, and it was created in 1963 and augmented in 2010. He gains presidential power regardless of if he signs them or not.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Didn’t he do this on round one as well?

[–] [email protected] 56 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, but Susan Collins is sure he's learned his lesson.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago

Oh bless her heart

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Lmao, these dudes won't even have the passwords to get into the computer system because of this. Shit. I'd hide the keys on them and upper decker all the toilets.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 weeks ago

That would be a pretty effective prank, if they gave a shit about doing their new jobs well.

[–] gedaliyah 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There is no transition. This is being operated as a hostile takeover.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

If you don't sign any of the documents pertaining to ethics or taking an oath to protect the constitution you can't be charged with failing to uphold those oaths and ethics I suppose.

[–] AshMan85 6 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, how else are they going to get people not fit to hold these positions in.

[–] paddirn 4 points 3 weeks ago

Guess we got to cancel the transition then.

[–] jordanlund 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean, technically, I don't think he signed the documents to transfer power TO Biden in the first place, did he?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 weeks ago

These documents aren't for accepting the role of president, they're related to receiving classified information and briefings prior to taking office. Trump will become president whether he signs these or not. Their name is confusing.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

seems like trump is just screwing his own incoming here. its going to be as he does it.

[–] HappycamperNZ -1 points 3 weeks ago

Don't interrupt an enemy when he's making a mistake
