Candace Fails screamed for someone in the Texas hospital to help her pregnant daughter. “Do something,” she pleaded, on the morning of Oct. 29, 2023.

Nevaeh Crain was crying in pain, too weak to walk, blood staining her thighs. Feverish and vomiting the day of her baby shower, the 18-year-old had gone to two different emergency rooms within 12 hours, returning home each time worse than before.

The first hospital diagnosed her with strep throat without investigating her sharp abdominal cramps. At the second, she screened positive for sepsis, a life-threatening and fast-moving reaction to an infection, medical records show. But doctors said her six-month fetus had a heartbeat and that Crain was fine to leave.

Now on Crain’s third hospital visit, an obstetrician insisted on two ultrasounds to “confirm fetal demise,” a nurse wrote, before moving her to intensive care.

By then, more than two hours after her arrival, Crain’s blood pressure had plummeted and a nurse had noted that her lips were “blue and dusky.” Her organs began failing.

Hours later, she was dead.

Fails, who would have seen her daughter turn 20 this Friday, still cannot understand why Crain’s emergency was not treated like an emergency.

But that is what many pregnant women are now facing in states with strict abortion bans, doctors and lawyers have told ProPublica.

That'll teach those sinful women for daring to have sex without their owners' permission. Even stuff like this won't sway the committed republicunts since they can fall back on some bullshit about "god's plan" or find ways to turn it back on the victims of their politics.

The doctors are breaking their oath every time they refuse treatment.

Yeah that's the part I don't get: The law is literally telling doctors to kill their patients and the doctors are just going along with it? WTF!

I swear I've read about four of these occurrence this week.

Does anyone know if there is a record of all preventable deaths from complicated pregnancies?

So I can drill this into my suddenly pro-life anti-immigrant Trumper family?

Doing wonders for that birth rate they care much about.
I'm convinced this is class warfare disguised as misogyny.

It is absolutely infuriating when you bring up a scenario like this and the "pro-life" say "there's exceptions when it's a real emergency."

Then of course they either victim blame or stay silent when the scenarios we described do happen.

Reading this I remember something I heard from a show about people working in the ER where the, had something similar(pregnant woman comes into the hospital with something live threatening) "The life of the baby is currently irrelevant, because if we can't save the mother, the kid will Die too."

Conservatives cannot see women as humans. Equality is incompatible with the hierarchy the conservative worldview is built upon.

I wonder how many doctors move to Texas due to their believes. How do you say strep throat and septics are the same? Strep is a quick and easy test.

This terrifies me for my daughter. Not just being pregnant but any illness.

And necessary lose to keep feeding new workers into capitalism.

The US healthcare system is pathetic and massive dumpster fire. I'm certain the treatment Candance received was based on her healthcare insurance. The mother should file a lawsuit against the hospitals, Texas and the fucking red politicians who support the cheap shit insurance companies.
