Now I'm wondering how long it would take

[–] mipadaitu 27 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It is designed like a hot air balloon, but it appears to have a sealed balloon. This is probably a helium balloon, which means you're going to have to wait for the helium to leak out.

Based on the art, I'd say it would last about as long as a normal latex filled helium balloon (it's bigger, so there's more in it, but also more surface area) so probably would take a day or two before it deflates enough to drop.

Remember that volume increases cubically whilst surface area increases exponentially (i think)

Volume is cubic (r^3) and surface area is quadratic (r^2)

Good luck with getting him to pay from 50 meters up in the air

Phones still work from 50~~ft~~ metres in the air....

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Good luck exchanging information ^over the distance I specified^

Oh, also, I am sure a balloon costs more than 1000$, so I am stealing that, lol.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Interesting. Through what mechanism will you steal a balloon that will stay aloft for a couple of days, has no mechanism of altitude control once you remove the rope, and will likely expel you at the first sign of any wind, assuming you don't die of hypothermia or hypoxia first?

Well, worst case scenario I die and he gets jail time.

I have been in a hot air balloon. You might Think there is some way to maneuver it.

If so, you’re wrong.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago

Just use the steering wheel

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You can, you just kinda hope to not hit a thermal or strong winds. You have weighted balasts on all sides of the basket, by changing the weight distribution you can influence the direction of the floating. Influence, not fully control; iirc as long as wind is less than 5mph opposed to the direction you want to go, you'll be able to pick up speed in that direction.

[–] NegativeLookBehind -3 points 2 months ago

A plane can be maneuvered. If the wind blows and you’re completely powerless because of it, you’re not maneuvering shit. A hot air balloon cannot be steered, is what I’m saying.

The fact that I can't immediately think of a reason this would be illegal scares me

[–] BetaBlake 28 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If you refused to land this would be extortion I believe, but I'm no lawyer

[–] GladiusB 1 points 2 months ago

So why aren't loot boxes extortion then? I immediately thought of EA.

cutting the rope and drifting can save you a grand

[–] realitista 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

A smart businessman would make sure to tell them they need to leave anything pointy on the ground.

Climbing down the rope would do the job as well, considering it’s latched to the rim of the basket. Probably be fairly easy, too. Wrap shirt around hands, clamp feet to rope (one above the other so the rope rests between your shoes, which then functions as a brake to slow your slide), and slide down.

Jump out of spite.

Kind of like with Boeing and those poor astronauts stuck on the space station

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

I would just wait until he went to sleep and then slide down the rope.
