It looks to me like this is some kind of reference and I don't really get the joke, but everyone would obviously always want the more comfortable sofa.
The train company posting that is kind of just making fun of everyone who had to sit in the little seat at the side.
Is this real?
Depending on the stuffing, I might actually rather take the seat, just because it's got armrests.
I'd prefer the seat to not sit next to anyone.

No, it's team seat all the way for me. If it gets full, seat is the way to go.
If you are used to taking public transportation you may want the seat just because no one can sit near you

I haven't had access to a train since the 1980s when I lived in Europe.
