I'm one of those who doesn't know, but also is that Phil Collins?
The pictured characters are from the movie “Ladyhawke”. They are lovers who are cursed: he is a wolf by night and she a hawk by day. In the movie, an eclipse plays a key role in breaking the curse. This movie features pretty sick sword fights and peak Michelle Pfeiffer.
And posting this meme resulted in me looking up the movie's IMDB trivia page, which has these two entries:
Spike II, the hawk featured in this movie, worked in the Universal Bird Show until 2000, when she was transfered to the National Audubon society and became an Audubon Ambassador until she died in May 2007. Another hawk was used for flying scenes, and another to sit on Rutger Hauer's arm. One enjoyed Hauer's company so much it would ruffle its feathers when seated on his arm, making it look more like a chicken.
Based on geographical, historical, and astronomical facts, this movie's action presumably takes place in 1386, in Italy, thirty-six years after the Black Death. Yet, although a real total eclipse did occur across southern France into Italy on January 1, 1386, dialogue specifically references the Crusades and there is none concerning the Black Death - and movie marketing indicated that this movie takes place during the thirteenth century. However, since this movie is a work of complete fiction, none of it matters.
There really should be more IMDB trivia entries like the second one.
Also, a hawk thinking Rutger Hauer was his kind of guy is very on-brand for Rutger Hauer.
I love that detail about the bff hawk
I can picture Rutger Hauer now... "Ah, you like me. Good. Now go out and kill for me."
And Matthew Broderick. One of my favorite fantasy movies from the 80s.
Matthew Broderick in between Wargames and Ferris Beuller's Day Off no less. The height of his career.
Rutger Hauer.
I remember watching that movie on the Sunday-nothing-on channel that would showcase all the older but really good in their day movies. They would play it about once a month or so. I think it's where I got my taste for certain types of D&D campaigns.
One of my parents favorite movies we watched it a lot.
I literally just finished rewatching this movie 2 minutes ago. It still holds up really well.
Honestly, one of the best fantasy movies of its day. I guess that's not saying much since a lot of it was crap, but it's still a great movie.
Look at her! Look at me! Look at us!
