Hi,

I remember reading that lemmy.world defederated from the exploding heads instance (rightly so imo), but now i’m seeing their posts on my feed.

Did the hack from the other day affect the defederation? is this a bug or something i have to change the settings of?

Thanks.

Yes we are defederated with them. The blocklist was emptied during the hack so for a couple of hours, they were not blocked.

Yes, the hackers emptied the defederation lists, so the operators will have to put them back on.

Pretty sure they were the ones who did it too

They were suuuuuper upset because lemmy.world doing it lead to a bunch of others.

It's why I joined this instance, my old said it was just a "difference of opinion" and we should tolerate the intolerant

Yeah I stayed here when the servers overloaded because someone not respecting my status as an equal human being shouldn’t be “a difference of opinion” it’s just bigotry.

I thought I saw a weird uptick in different content yesterday than what I had been used to seeing on lemmy.world. Just way more extreme political stuff on the Left and Right. That makes sense now.

The posts newly Federated after the block list got emptied, so it'll take a little bit for them to go away, since I don't believe Lemmy retroactively removes content from defederated instances.

That makes sense with what I'm seeing. I don't see any new posts, but yesterday I saw them on the 2nd or 3rd page if I kept scrolling.

The instance I'm on had some problems with the block list with the update to 18.1. All the blocked instances, got merged into the connected instances.

Maybe something had to be cleaned up manually, and got forgotten.

EDIT: As far as I see they are in the blocked list...

So, based on what I’m reading from other posts, can someone please confirm that I’m understanding this correctly?

During the hack, they removed EH and other instances from the blocked list. During this time, new posts from those communities leaked in. They’re now blocked again, and we aren’t seeing new posts, but the ones that slipped in might appear in our feed occasionally for a few days.

I’ve been recommending lemmy.world to some friends, some of whom are trans, and I reeeeeeeeally don’t want them to sign up and see some of the posts I bumped into from those instances. Is it possible for an admin to wipe all of the extant posts from an instance?

What did the exploding heads do?

[–] DarthFrodo 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It seems to be a far right culture war circlejerk with a focus on harassing trans people (based on the few posts I've seen).

The admins explained their choice to defederate in https://lemmy.world/post/747912
