Welcome to /c/birding, a community for people who like birds, birdwatching and birding in general! Feel free to post your birding photos or just photos of birds you found in general, but please follow the rules as outlined below.

  1. This should go without saying, but please be nice to one another. No petty insults, no bigotry, no harassment, hate speech, nothing of that sort! Depending on the severity, you'll either only get your comment removed and a warning or your comment will be removed and you will be banned from /c/birding.

  2. This is a community for posting content of birds, nothing else. Please keep the posts related to birding or birds in general.

  3. When posting photos or videos that you did not take, please always credit the original photographer! Link to the original post on social media as well, if there is one.

  4. Absolutely no AI-generated content is allowed! I know it has become quite difficult to tell whether or not something is AI-generated or not, but please make sure that whatever you post is not AI-generated. If it is, your post will be removed. If you continously post AI-generated content, you'll be banned from /c/birding (but it's obviously okay if you post AI-generated stuff once or twice without knowing you did so).

  5. Please provide rough information location, if possible. This is a more loosely-enforced rule, especially because it is sometimes not possible to provide a location. But if you post a photo you took yourself, please provide a rough location and date of the sighting.

Spent my whole adult life saying I didn't give a shit about birds. Yeah.

  • When I lived in Chicago 20 years ago, and their bodies were littering the streets from West Nile virus, I noticed. I noticed the lack of birds in the sky. Seems no one else did.
  • I now have 3 different types of feeders and a birdhouse.
  • Got my childhood treasures back, uh, there's a lot of antique bird figurines. And I used to collect owls.
  • Saw a pileated woodpecker for the first time at camp in December. NEAT! Got a couple of feeders and started learning to make suet.
  • Been rolling my own hummingbird food for years.

But I'm not really into birds.

What do you do for hummingbird food? I'm trying to attract them to my apartment's roof garden. I see them up there once or twice a year so I know they get this high up but I want more

You can make hummingbird nectar at home. I think it’s 4:1 water to sugar, let it cool after boiling to dissolve and fill up a feeder. Double check the ratio but I used to get them at my 21st floor apartment. Good luck, they are my favorites!

Plant a little salvia and place feeders near. mine used to draw them in like cats to catnip.

Those pileated woodpeckers are so big! Like the size of a chicken, they're so cool.

One day you notice a gray hair, the next you notice a gray jay.

I just turned old years old and one of my kids got me a t-shirt that simply reads "i like birds."

and it's true... i like em a lot... 🤓

seeing a group of cedar waxwings for the first time a couple weeks ago had me marveling like a child again...

and also saying... "i thought they'd be bigger" 😁

I absolutely love ducks and own 10 of them. Any time I see ducks in the wild, I love identifying their breeds, or what breeds their parents were if they're hybrids. Muscovy ducks are my fave because they're just so happy. Totally act like dogs. I own three of them and they're a joy.

We raised ducks and geese for a good long while. My partner adored them. 😊

They're amazing animals. One of my passions in life. I would love to have more, but I don't have the money or space lol.

I used to argue with guys about punk rock and politics, now I mostly try to parse sparrows. Got a lot of lookalikes here. Don't even get me started on the hawks
