some of us have to close our eyes to concentrate on something complex. you can only process so much information at once.

[–] NegativeInf 61 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Right. I'm not really turning down the volume, I'm adjusting my attention focus.

There was something I heard about why talking on the phone is more dangerous than talking with someone in the car. One of the reasons was that while someone is talking to you in the car they know when to stop talking when the situation causes for the drivers attention. While a phone conversation the person on the other end has no clue clue of the situation in the car.

Some passengers do, others... Well...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

I've had accidents due to talking to one of my passengers. I've never had an accident from a phone convo in the car.

Yeah, merging into busy traffic is too much visual stimulus, closing my eyes helps

Wrong wheel!

[–] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago (1 children)

cmon

reducing stimulus in one arena allows for processing in others. turning down the audio can absolutely let you spend more energy on the visual field.

[–] agent_flounder 3 points 10 months ago

I'm sure they were joking but you're spot on.

Like, closing your eyes helps you focus on listening better (unless you're trying to read lips but anyway)

[–] quaddo 5 points 10 months ago

If you hit an icy patch on a winding road, I recommend not closing your eyes.

[–] [email protected] 76 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It's because you are focusing more with your eyes because you're looking for something so you turn the music down to use your ears to be more aware of your surroundings. I'm not sure why people have such a hard time figuring this out.

I just need some of the brain power back

[–] kemsat 30 points 10 months ago

Yeah, like freeing up brain power for visual processing. The brain can only do so much at a time.

[–] Alexstarfire 29 points 10 months ago

Sometimes you got to free up computing power.

Does anyone else sneeze when they go outside into bright sunlight?

[–] beckerist 33 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I do that. It's called the Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst (ACHOO) syndrome.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 10 months ago (3 children)

I'm not going to Google that because I want it to be true.

[–] platypus_plumba 5 points 10 months ago

I fart when I drink milk.

[–] Pulsar 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It does happens to me too. And I have one other sneeze trigger weirder than sun.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart 2 points 10 months ago

Yeah me too.

A finger in the bum or a corkscrew in my pee hole makes me sneeze instantly.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Does garlic make you sneeze too by any chance?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

You almost got me! I started typing a serious response and then got it.

Kinda wish I was a vampire.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

TFW a passenger turns up the radio to cover a fart

[–] Viking_Hippie 5 points 10 months ago

That's what you get for offering a ride to Homer Simpson

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

My dad always did this.

I actually concentrate better with some music in the background, so I turn that shit up not off.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

nah im turning it down so I can hear engines rumbling and snipe the spot but someassole is like 'what so you can see?' and Im still trying to find a space Justin! maybe you wpuld have less jokes if you got a drivers lisence mr made us late to the movie to begin with,.... with your hair.... god i hate hearing myself think.... THERSASPACE GO SPEED OF PLAID... ok music back up and car off and.... the keys are inside... fucking brain... THATSWHY,

[–] Mr_Blott 12 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Did you try turning the volume down before you type?

[–] Potatos_are_not_friends 5 points 10 months ago

You joke but yes, I absolutely do for focusing at work.

If I notice the music, my attention is pulled away. And switch/mute for a bit so I can laser focus on a specific result.

[–] Viking_Hippie 2 points 10 months ago

Maybe they should turn the screen off too, just in case.
