Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either [email protected] or [email protected].
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email [email protected]. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

You don't need anyone to come inspect anything. It's literally a small plastic device you can buy online or at a store, put a battery in, and forget it exists until it tells you it needs a new battery or it saves your life.
When it's required and the landlord's responsibility, they're liable if a fire happens and the detectors don't do their job. So they're gonna send someone out periodically to make sure it's still functioning properly. There's nobody there to check yours if you just buy your own.
Seriously, if that's your only hold up, please get some smoke detectors in your house. Having smoke detectors isn't something that you "miss", it's something that you hope you never have to have needed but the one time you do need it, it can save your life, your loved one's lives, everything you own.
Your absolutly right. But I probably won't do that. It just so unimportant overall, I won't think of it in a few days. And it's not like I'm going to start a fire. That just happens to other people. Not me.
You realize that this mentality is considered a huge joke pretty much everywhere no..? "That only happens to other people" is not true. Does your house have electricity? If yes, an electric fire completely beyond your control could start tonight. Any batteries in the house? See my first comment. Do you cook? Accidents happen (and no, they don't only happen to "other people"). There's not just a subset of the population that's just having constant house fires and everyone else is safe.
Do car accidents only happen to other people too? Or medical ailments, or crime?
Yes, every much. And I have cat hair everywhere and a lot of electricity. Seems like a risk factor.
But you know ... It won't happpen to me.
I uh.. hm. Well good luck with that. I hope you love alone and aren't making this decision for others to live with..
