I am, but you don't have it down in the states?

[–] Stamets 49 points 11 months ago (7 children)

I'm Canadian too. Here's the absolutely batshit thing. They do have it down in the states but they don't call it Kraft Dinner. To them it's just "Kraft Mac & Cheese". Their boxes just say Macaroni and Cheese with a Kraft brand on top of it. They actually have to distinguish between boxed and baked mac and cheese...

[–] [email protected] 16 points 11 months ago (3 children)

This.

This right here, is what is wrong with America

[–] [email protected] 37 points 11 months ago (1 children)

As an American, I can say this is the least of our problems.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago (3 children)

The mindset of “this kind of works for us, don’t change it, even if what you have is better” is at the root of most issues with America. Healthcare or Kraft Dinner, American Exceptionalism is damaging.

[–] captainlezbian 4 points 11 months ago

Excuse me but our health care doesn’t even kinda work for us. It’s a full on disaster. The duct tape (Obamacare) is helping but before that if you lost your job after you had cancer nobody would ever insure any cancer treatments for you again.

We should’ve lost the Revolution.

Slavery would have been abolished 32 years earlier, and we would have had a Parliamentary system. Canada did it right.

[–] bitwaba 2 points 11 months ago

Here's a really crazy thing that we do: have Mac & cheese made by someone other than Kraft. It actually is exceptional.

[–] Keeponstalin 4 points 11 months ago

I agree, baked Mac n Cheese reigns supreme

[–] Stamets 2 points 11 months ago

Could not agree more, my friend.

[–] SpaceNoodle 9 points 11 months ago

It's because, unlike y'all, we sometimes eat things other than mac & cheese for dinner.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Baked? I guess you can do it that way, but generally not how it's done in the lower 48. Just boiled and cheesed.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago (2 children)

It depends on how much your parents love you

[–] [email protected] 11 points 11 months ago

Whatever man, my dad is just out getting cigarettes. He's coming back.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

We sometimes got chopped hotdogs in ours. True love.

[–] sartalon 2 points 11 months ago

We got ground beef once. Life hasn't peaked that high since.

[–] thorbot 6 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

Nobody calls it Kraft Mac and cheese. It’s just Mac and cheese. I love that you can’t fathom the lack of “Kraft” at the beginning though. Also many of us never buy that shitty ass boxed stuff. We just boil macaroni noodles and add cheese sauce. Wild, I know.

[–] Stamets 2 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Cheese sauce

Your country is place of sin

[–] thorbot 3 points 11 months ago

Butter flour milk and cheddar cheese in a pan makes the most delicious cheese sauce ever. If that’s sinful then send me to hell because it’s fucking delicious

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Pretty sure the French invented that hundreds of years ago, not the US

So yeah I'd agree tbh

(Cheese sauce is melted cheese, flour, and milk over heat, you're likely thinking of canned cheese or Velveeta)

[–] bitwaba 1 points 11 months ago
  • Roux: flour + oil/butter
  • Bechamel: milk + roux
  • Mornay sauce: cheese + bechamel
[–] theyoyomaster 1 points 11 months ago

It’s just blue box to me.

[–] captainlezbian 4 points 11 months ago

It’s the early adopter problem. We invented both things so didn’t really have room to distinguish. So it’s lazy Mac and cheese vs bar Mac and cheese vs honey did you really need to buy three cheeses and make a full ass brick roux Mac and cheese

[–] Ohi 2 points 11 months ago

If the argument is which country has a better name for it, we Americans are calling it what it is, Kraft's Mac & Cheese. It's also served as a side dish a lot of the times, so calling it a "Dinner" implies it's used as the main course.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

I went to Columbus a few years ago and I was surprised how every restaurant I went no matter if it was a hole in the wall or a fine dining establishment they all had a version of Mac and Cheese on their menu.

From a simple version to versions with lobster I tried them all. Years later when I was in Montreal I noticed a similar theme where they all offer their version of Poutine.

I couldn't imagine if KD made Poutine it would taste anywhere near what I ate in Montreal just as regular KD was nothing like the stuff I ate in Columbus that week.

[–] Dkarma 14 points 11 months ago

We don't call it kraft. It's just Mac and cheese. Fuck Robert kraft.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 11 months ago

It’s called Mac&Cheese here in the states
