BS statement made by people who are scared to lift their hood. I've got an E39 and it's no harder to work on than my sister's 2011 Civic. Just do your research and make sure you're not getting a lemon or one that's been beat to hell (which affects a disproportionate amount of BMWs) and they're fine cars
I'm not afraid to lift my hood. I do light work on my car. I've seen the engine bay of many BMWs and they are filled with cheap plastic. Also they are way harder to work on. You have to almost disassemble the entire engine just to reach certain parts. I would never buy a BMW
