Hi all. Apologies if this is not allowed here. I know people out there are struggling, but I just want to share my good news with someone.

It's a big milestone of accomplishment in my life, but I feel weird just telling family members or my online friends about it. The only other people who know are my coworkers because we all got the same raise. Money doesn't go as far nowadays due to crazy inflation post COVID and my area has higher cost of living than where I grew up, but I'm still very happy about this. I remember back when I used to only make minimum wage. All those years of schooling eventually made their way back to me. I'll never make as much money as someone like a doctor, but it's definitely enough for me to live comfortably as a single person.

Anyway, I'll delete this in a bit (or sooner if it gets removed by a mod), but I hope you guys out there have a good weekend.

Edit: Thank you guys very much :)

Edit 2: Jeez there are so many more comments than I expected. You guys are so nice!!

When I was a teenager, I used to volunteer for the local library. It was a nice way to spend some time, discuss with the regulars about their latest readings, and feel useful to the local community.

What are your experiences?

So about 2 years ago, I moved away. Broken spirit broken person, over 3000 miles. However, yesterday I landed for my first visit back here. And I just feel weird. Like I'm not supposed to be here or something, it's very ominous. I constantly feel anxious.

The weirdest thing was seeing how my parents have started to age. And the woods where I used to hang out are all housing developments now. I'm currently sleeping on a mattress in my old room, aka the office now, surrounded by random shelving and printers and stuff. it's really a weird feeling in here too.

I don't know what I expected but I definitely don't feel like I'm "home". It's like some weird alternate dimension version of home. There's still some people I'm yet to see and I wonder how that's gonna go. So far everything already feels uncomfortably different. Alongside that, the rose tint has also come off and I have a lot of bad memories going through my head too instead of any sort of nostalgia. Almost like the different person I was back then is still lurking here somewhere watching me.

Anyone familiar with such a feeling, after being away for so long?

Everything is turning into disgusting subscription services. Most recently I saw home printers that required a monthly subscription service in order to print.

So, how long before Windows is a subscription? They have already brought ads into Windows.

Yes, I think I'll sign up for the...hm, the "Casual Gamer" tier, which allows 2 hours per week of gaming. Although I could always watch an ad to unlock 30 more minutes.

I started using the app a few weeks back. I try to always limit the length of my browsing sessions to avoid losing too much time.

I also have dedicated accounts for different types of content (movies and shows, language learning, parenting, history, etc.) so that I still maintain some kind of focus.

Also the Revanced version helps with no ads and limited tracking compared to the original version.

The best would be a Fediverse alternative, I know there is https://goldfish.social/ but it still seems in an early stage, hopefully it will get more mature in the future.

I'll admit I'm a little lost/down, it came out of nowhere! Over the years he's produced an endless stream of genuinely interesting videos. I can't really think of any other video hosts that can make a wide range of topics sound so interesting.

Probably I'm just scared of change...

On the flip side though, I'm really happy that he's decided his personal happiness is more important, and has decided to focus on people close to him.

What are your thoughts?

Besides lemmy of course

Edit: By community I didn't mean lemmy community. I meant like a fandom for an old or obscure piece of media with still some activity

Someone asked this on Quora: "I learn very quickly by asking questions. Is it acceptable to interrupt someone during a conversation to gain more clarity on a topic?" Which I relate to a lot.

Someone answered this: "Yes , it is very rude to do because maybe on a little further into conversation your question may be answered and if not then , make a mental note of it and as soon as you see an opening in the conversation - circle back to the point in the where your question fits in and ask it . Interupting someon while they are talking can cause that person to lose sight of they were want say and what thier point was going to be ."

But this doesn't seem to always work for me, and I must say it depends on the person you're talking to and the situation.

  1. Sometimes if someone misunderstands something you said or that has happened or gets a fact wrong, they can end up going on a pointless/misguided tangent in the conversation and even can start getting progressively angrier on their own without you even saying anything, whereas if you interrupt and clarify the misunderstanding that can help to calm them down in certain cases, and to course-correct the conversation to make it more productive and reasonable.
  2. Sometimes they never allow you a chance to speak at all, talk for ages on their own, and then simply exit the conversation before you would have any ability to respond to specific things they said earlier.
  3. If they say so many things you want to respond to, it can add up to a lot, and you may not be able to ever get through them if you can't respond to them as they come up.
  4. Making a mental note is often impossible for me, I frequently forget and need to address something immediately in order to remember it, unless I can pause the conversation to make a physical or digital note (can't focus on what they're saying while writing it) which people would probably find even more rude either way.

I've also seen lots of debaters, journalists and interviewers interrupting people as their standard method or style of dialogue, and it seems to work for them (sometimes people get annoyed at them, sometimes they don't and often do the same thing), so I don't know.

I would appreciate if anyone has any literature on why it may be acceptable to interrupt sometimes or perhaps a recognised style of communication that allows this, as well as any speakers who defend this practice and debates about the topic itself.

Thanks

I've always loved flashlights. Yes FLASHLIGHTS with an A!!! Anyway, apparently not many people share my rather niche interest.

So I ask you, fellow Lemmites, what are your hobbies and weird obsessions that you can ramble on about for hours?

Please feel free to ramble on about your passions here. Maybe you'll find some likeminded individuals!

Many of your probably know that motive of YouTube forcing users to turn on their watch history-- which is trying to get as much eyeball attention from you as possible for more data generation personally about you and send them to advertisers.

Well, I turned my viewing history off indefinitely. I have the Subscription page bookmarked as the default page when I go to YouTube. It's finally great to see videos from channels I have missed in a long while! Not only that, because I am not inundated and distracted by thousands of videos being recommended to me due to YouTube algorithm spying on me, I am able to catch up with my backlogs of videos in "Watch Later". I am still adding some videos for later viewing but it is not as many as it had been.

Thank you YouTube for enshittification of your service! This actually made me enjoy the viewing experience of YouTube even more! (although, is it enshittification if I like the end result?)

My eyelid has been twitching every 10 mins for the past 3 days. It's getting quite annoying.

Besides punching my eyeball what else could I do?

I'd like to loop a song so its perfectly looped and replays seamlessly when on repeat.

Can someone nudge me in the correct direction how I can get that or where to start?

Edit: Anytune app was most useful for this ;)
