That's so cool! Appreciate all the detail as well!

In strict technical terms, yeah it's okay, albeit with the shortcomings to be expected of a smaller development team. In terms of population and activity with this format, I think it may be at the top compared to alternatives as well.

There's still others and other software options though for this format that people could try, which honestly may even be technically better, but lacking population/activity means they're in an odd spot.

The first of these you'll read about on here are likely Kbin/Mbin, possibly followed by PieFed or still-in-development Sublinks. Kbin/Mbin is definitely the runner-up in terms of federated Reddit-alternatives, as it was one of the few options available at the time people were leaving Reddit.

PieFed and Sublinks have emerged more recently with different priorities and approaches compared to Lemmy, but with the same desire to offer a federated option for people to deploy.

The last you may read about around here would be of stuff like Discuit, Lobste.rs, Raddle (and any other sites built with Postmill), Tildes, and the like, which are all most like Reddit in terms of their being stand-alone sites, unconnected to any others running the same underlying server software. However each of these, I think, may have lower population than the cumulative population of the Lemmy network of sites.

All that said, cutting to your last question: ultimately it heavily depends on the instance/site you settle into.

Lemmy isn't a monolith, which is both its greatest strength and weakness compared to Reddit. You may be able to find a Lemmy instance/site that heavily blocks out politics and moderates lightly, but the irony of this is that it means it may have to be overly-policed to achieve that, and might appear less active in the process from heavy disconnection/defederation from any instances/sites that permit political posts/discussion.

Right now though, much of Lemmy is heavily political, and it's arguably because of lax moderation to keep political posts/discussions to relevant communities, which is itself probably in part because of lacking moderation tools to enable lighter touches to redirect posts/discussions.

Nevertheless, it's possibly the best option fitting the format available at the moment given the rest, but if Lemmy and federation doesn't suit you you might check out Tildes or Discuit. Although be advised: Tildes remains invite only for now.

Honestly I think any general/casual discussion community would welcome posts about those subjects as well, which there are a number of across Lemmy sites to check out.

They mean it in the sense of new, hombrew NES games as I understand it, instead of new games that mimic the NES style

I think you'll be in for a treat when you get to it!

That's unfortunate, yet what a wicked legacy of aircraft to leave behind! The Dragonfly looks really cool and like it'd be a wild ride to fly!

Whoa, chonk for sure! Do the sprinkles inside move about?

[–] ElectroVagrant 4 points 8 months ago

Right? Also here's how little I knew of it going in: I only knew the name of it and thought it might be an edgy show about some yakuza or something that was constantly going all out 😂

[–] ElectroVagrant 1 points 8 months ago

nvm of course it wouldn't work for OP/me

Er...I get this is a play off of the other post, but you could do that in a comment to it if you wanted instead.

As is this may as well be a duplicate post, so I'm locking it.

Thanks for looking this up! Also looking at the article's date...This is from 7 years ago!

Also this link answers OP's question:

"I don't have anybody. My family is in Tennessee and I told them not to tell my son anything that's going on," said Fitzgerald.

Given that this isn't a timely post at all, I don't see much point to keeping this thread open.

But compare with GOG then. They sell games, you download them with no DRM so you own the download essentially.

This is the model digital media should take, frankly. Anything less may as well be misleading marketing, as far as I'm concerned.

For expressing frustration at the amount of Reddit discussion on Lemmy, I recommend [email protected], [email protected], or the like.

For discussions concerning Reddit, there are a few different communities you might look to such as [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], and probably others I'm unaware of. The flipside of these suggestions is that these are also the communities those uninterested in the topic may block if they wish to minimize the amount of such discussions they're seeing in their feed.

Constructive threads concerning the transfer of information or app development from Reddit to Lemmy here remain okay, but threads simply complaining will be locked and redirected to the aforementioned venting communities to vent in, or Reddit ones to block to hopefully help curate their feeds.

Thanks for your understanding, and feel free to message me if you need any help in navigating to those communities.

does it still go through with language selected?

Almonds tend to be one of mine in a pinch, a good fresh apple too, but I'd love to know some more, particularly in terms of meals.

may be my end flaking out, testing

what, why did it work here and not in the other community here, aahhh

I like to try to read over a number of news sites to get a broader perspective on matters, and understandably, several of them eventually want a subscription. Problem is, if I were to subscribe to all of them, that'd add up fast.

Arguably a better expense than, say, several streaming services, but I suspect data may show, many aren't about to make that compromise.

In fact, it might be fun to compare the two, so lemmy know below if you do so!

Icon/banner resolutions? (self.moderators)
submitted 2 years ago by ElectroVagrant to c/moderators

I've been toying around with this for awhile now and even as I thought I had a good idea of the right scale for icons/banners, Lemmy's tripped me up.

Searched in other communities & looked on other instances at some of their community icons/banners that look good, but there doesn't appear to be much consistency. You see some 512x512 icons right alongside 256x256 icons and they both tend to look okay.

However in trying to emulate this with some images, I find the "previews" to be unhelpful, appearing to clip or sometimes stretch them.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Lately I've been using Feeder on Android, but there's an awkward bug when returning to a feed (jumping either above or below the tapped article) that has me looking about for alternatives.

I'm aware of Feedly and Inoreader, but tend to prefer my RSS readers running locally/on-device if possible.

Thanks for any suggestions!

You may have heard of third places before, but in case it's new to you, they're essentially community spaces where you can chill & socialize...Like here, I suppose! But typically they refer to in-person community spaces.

Does your area of the world still have a number of these, or are they in the decline? Do you know if your in-person communities are trying to establish or renovate theirs to help people connect or reconnect with one another?

servers please be friends

I didn't really intend to get into moderating communities here, much like I imagine many others didn't, but since I'm doing so, I can't help noticing the mod tools are pretty basic.

Some improvements I think I'd like would probably be:

  • View modlog by community, so when you click the modlog at the bottom of a community's sidebar, it filters down to that community.
  • An option to review a moderated post's contents without having to go to the modlog. This would be really useful in moderation teams to see why your teammates removed/moderated a post/comment.
  • A separate suspend option for misconduct that's not outright banworthy. I've seen some bans in modlog that suggest it may be used like suspending, but that's not really intuitive imo.
  • Multiple post/comment selection. Right now this is pretty low priority, but if ever waves of spam come up, this would be pretty critical to clearing out spam.

These are just a few that come to mind. What are some others you've had occur to you?

Recently I've tried to make posts & comments to a couple remote instances (slrpnk.net & just now sh.itjust.works), and while they appear to post correctly (not getting stuck on spinning create/submit circle), they never appear on the remote instance.

In the case of posting to slrpnk.net I gave it a couple days before posting this, as I know sometimes federation can be finicky (and it's hard to tell whether it's your end or their end). With sh.itjust.works, I admittedly haven't given it much time yet (only just posted), but from experience I know typically the delay isn't that long unless something may be going awry.

I only noticed this happening after @[email protected] disabled federation debugging to address posting delays. Perhaps it's mere coincidence?

Still, I thought it worth reporting, as I suspect some may not have realized it just yet as they're still getting used to things around here & may only be posting to local Lemmy.World communities.

Edit: I did another test just now with a comment over on a lemmy.one thread which did federate promptly (albeit the edit's taking its time carrying over), so now I'm really not sure what may be going on here.

Of the three, I'd think slrpnk.net should have the fewest delays, being a smaller instance, whereas I understand the delay with sh.itjustworks, but then I see that it appears it may have roughly a similar amount of folks to lemmy.one...So, yeah. Situation's unclear.
