I agree with your point about the vote system. The single change Lemmy made that I think makes it much healthier is that you have no profile total up or down votes. There is no reason to chase imaginary internet points, while giving the court of public opinion the tools to tell you your wrong.

For example, Youtube became a much more unreliable place when it removed the dislike button. So much so that third party plugins now are what people have to use to decide, at a glance, if something is worthy of other peoples time.

For the longest time my white whale was a meme video that could not be found online. In 2010, at the summit of Mt. Washington, I was on a camping trip with a large summer camp group. There is a tourist trap/weather monitoring facility and at the time, in the basement, was a little history exibit about the place. There was a TV in the lobby that had a clip of a video made by the meteorologists called "The Breakfast of Champions", and I wanted to see it. Only problem is that it cost 2$ to get in and teenage Bahnd had no cash.

The video consists of two of the people who worked at the facility and a very brave camera man, attempt to wait a table outside on the patio. For those who do not know, Mt Washington NH as some of the worst weather in the northern hemisphere, firstly because it is the highest mountian in eastern north america, and because they bother to write it down there. The video shows one person attemping to serve cereal+milk and toast to another guy attemping to hold down a card table & table cloth in ~140 mph winds. Footings are eventually lost and the table is blown down the mountian.

I returned to Mt. Washington, I want to say I went back in 2019, with a fresh 2$ bill (shut up, I can be weird) to finally see the video, only to find the building had been renovated and the exibit had been removed. I asked the staff and in 2017 it had been uploaded to the internet. Link to The Breakfast of Champions.

Now you all can see the meme that was almost lost to time, and I never saw until long after it was already moved online.

I liked the show, im glad they actually ended a show. (Good job netflix for not killing it early). Still searching for the Chekhov's gun for the Officer Nora twist (im missing something).

Im very hopefull they continue making shows in the setting. I dont play LoL anymore but I love the lore. It doesn't yet have all the baggage that large fantasy usually settings do.

One of my games im playing a sasuage knight. Warrior3/Bararian6. You pick eldeich knight for the bound weapon and grab spirit animals for the barb. At lvl6 barb, pick the aspect of the chimpanze to blind tagrgets when you throw camping supplies at them. The rest is a standard throwing build but your primary weapon is the sasuage link that doubles as a basic club.

Im a bit suprised where New Hampshire is on the list. They are the little texas of new england and you can not tell anyone from that state what to do.

This reminds me of one of the jokes from an old episode Fairlyodd Parents where they make Cosmo the "Rice President", it sounds official but is functionally meaningless. They needed to give him a promotion, but not the power to do anything.

Darth Vader is too cool for that shit, your probably going to be more of a Dark Helmet.

I got a pinephone, not a pinephone pro a long time ago and its barely a toy. Think of it more of an attempt to put a raspberry pi into a phone. I got a mobile version of kali running on it and got it to dual-boot off its own storage or the SD card based on how you turn it on (I call it Evil Phone and it just collects dust these days). I really liked the hardware switches for the sensors on the back, but thats really its only party trick.

If your looking for a daily driver, I would suggest Fairphone or a Pixle with Graphene installed.

Question: What do people in this community recommend for self-hosted instant messanger projects? I host a VOIP service for my nerd herd and due to recent events i'm attempting to migrate out groups chats off of the major platforms (Discord, Google chats, Slack, Etc.) as well.

There are a few notes that were requested/requirements.

  • Self-hosted
  • Supports images
  • Has a decent mobile app
  • Encrypted communication
  • Expected load ~25 users.

I am doing my own digging but wanted to hear the communites opinions on some of the projects that came up in searches.

  • IRC/XMPP - dosent really work for the request but is a classic, so I feel had to mention it.
  • Rocket.Chat - seems like the best option so far, but I was having trouble finding current reviews, and its licensing is a bit much.
  • Matrix also is close to checking all the boxes, but it wasnt clear how it works on mobile (Element seemed like the mobile app that was recommended).
  • Revolt was high on the SEO results but most of the discussion around it was about drama with the maintainers (that is what prompted this post, i'm fishing for more current opinions).
  • Zulip seemed similar to Rocket.Chat, but more expensive if we had to get a license.

I appreciate peoples opinions and recomendations on this topic.
