Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

The company does not admit wrongdoing and says no one in the company acted in bad faith, said Jon Mills, a spokesperson for Cummins Inc. in an email to USA TODAY.

Cummins Inc. allegedly installed defeat devices on the engines of hundreds of thousands of 2013 to 20199 RAM 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, according to the Department of Justice. The DOJ also says the company installed defeat devices on the engines of 330,000 newer RAM pickup trucks.

So that was a fucking lie.

Lmao this is the same thing Volkswagen did years ago.

Yes and it was widely known at the time that they were specifically being targeted while most manufacturers were using defeat devices because they were outcompeting American auto makers.

The way they did it was elegant.

They knew that when doing the testing, the car would be on a rolling road inside, and usually when they do that they have the car doors open to let air go into the cabin and to talk to people etc.

So they programmed in a rule that "if the car is doing 100kph, and the door is open, change engine map to use more fuel and output less emissions".

Because it was extremely unlikely someone would have the car door open and doing 100kph in any other circumstances.

That really is clever. Imagine if they put that kinda thinking into making their product better instead.

The red line is the Euro6 emissions standard.

What’s the green and what point are you trying to make?

Average NOx emission (g/km) pretty obvious since we are talking about the diesel scandal.

USA here. Can we please just start taxing fuel appropriately and remove subsidies? If fuel just cost what it actually costs (like the EU) then most of the problem goes away because only people who actually get work done with their truck's will afford to run them and only while getting a job done. Currently 2/3 of the heavy duty trucks I see are grocery haulers for little boys.
