Rumor has it that it's an RK3566 powered device, so systems before PSP, DC, and N64 will work fine, but those three will be a mixed bag.

I would be interested, depending on the price. Closed shell design means it can be tossed into a bag without worrying about scratching the screen.

I'd be worried about the unit being scratched ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] NewNewAccount 23 points 8 months ago (2 children)

A scratched unit still works. A broken screen renders it pretty much useless.

I'm even more worried about the exposed L/R buttons. I have an otherwise perfectly functional Nintendo DS with these buttons being unreliable at best (received second hand already like that). Not that I have any better idea how to solve this, but I'd definitely not just chuck it into a backpack. Maybe a pocket.

I’ve got a Retroid Flip and the shoulder buttons are my largest concern.

I'd prefer no scratches at all, even if that means sacrificing probability, I mean, we could always use screen protectors for that matter, in fact I did, but it never stopped me from overprotecting my clamshell handhelds.

These sticks look super uncomfortable to use though

I always found the SP super uncomfortable to hold compared to the original GBA, it's made for kid-sized hands.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago

I have big hands and the SP is comfy to use, just need to rest your pinkies under the console

I hope somebody in 10 years will make a good 3DS-inspired handheld, well maybe except 3D aspect.

There is a 3ds style dual screen handheld:

Ayaneo Flip DS

Or build this for a premium dual screen emulator:

If it works best with older systems, then why the thumb sticks i wonder. Hope they can bump up the power for at least n64 and psp. That would be so nice.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Because they are selling the product the customers think they are getting, not the one that they actually get. I guarantee that a device with thumb sticks and lousy performance will sell better than one without sticks and with better performance.

Hope for better, but expect worse. But that form factor has me hooked.

I picked up a Miyoo Mini Plus earlier this year as an impulse buy, and ended up liking it enough that I regret not buying a higher end model with analog sticks. Still, don't know if it's worth trying to upgrade now - I'm waiting for the day we can get a full SteamOS device in this form factor.

[–] yamanii 9 points 8 months ago

it's not really needed since the only thing that has an analog stick that it can emulate is a PS1.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago

What games do you play on it?

[–] loie 6 points 8 months ago

Absolutely love the miyoo mini plus, very interested in this one.

[–] Yokozuna 4 points 8 months ago

This looks super sick. Thanks for posting, gona follow this.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Sticks aren't needed. But what is, is wifi and retroachievement support.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Do retroachievements even make sense on such a portable device? As far as I know, they don't function at all when offline. When I'm in the range of my wifi, I'm more likely to grab something more akin to a Steam Deck, so Miyoo devices would almost always stay offline.

[–] Tier1BuildABear 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

This right here is why I'm SO happy I got the og Miyoo Mini. Perfect size without the extra unneeded bells and whistles

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

I have the Plus one, also very happy with the size, so all's good. I just know I keep the wifi off almost all the time, so I'm quite confused by the RA craze.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

Retro achievements are just a nice way to focus on specific games. Since not every game has them, it's a nice way to whittle down the choice paralysis. It's nice to just keep track of the progress of your games as a whole too.

However, I do wish the overall RA community was less obsessed with the fake internet points that come with them though. That's why there's no plan for an offline version, they're scared people will manipulate their scores. It's dumb.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I love the idea of using RA for new game discovery or choosing which one to play! I need to try it out, even without actually using the achievements themselves. Thanks for sharing!

Don't they have a "hardcode" mode already for that?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

They do have a hardcore mode, but the discourse is still the same in forums whenever people ask about the potential of an offline mode.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

For me, yeah. I don't really go out and about with my handhelds, they're just so I can play anywhere in the house and in bed at night

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

If I had a portable retro console system like that, wifi and retroachievement support would be something definitely on my list of things I'd want. Retroachievements are great for many reasons.

[–] buru5 3 points 8 months ago

looks alright color scheme is a bit gaudy and not a huge fan of the big miyoo logo. they can do better than this, i think. i have the miyoo mini plus and really enjoy it so have high hopes.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago

I have enough carpel tunnel already

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Looks nice. Wondering about the price...
