Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

:::spoiler Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Christian has released a final update to Apollo with the option to opt out of the refund. I urge everybody that was happy with his contribution to our community to do so since he will have to refund out of his own pocket. And yes, this was for an entire year of the app, but he did I no way know that Reddit was going to change the pricing beforehand when he even asked them what the future for Reddit and Apollo would look like back in the beginning of the year and apparently Reddit said that there wouldn’t be any major changes in 2023!?

Also, the amazingly talented artists of the Apollo icons have contributed with good bye wallpapers that you can get for a donation ❤️

And u/spez tried slandering this man as greedy and selfish. Utterly despicable.

In the grand scheme of history, this is nothing. But it's hard not to feel like I'm living through a huge moment.

The news, connections, answers, laughter, sadness, shock, joy--all of it--that this app delivered to me will be fondly cherished.

I posted this because for history this might be small but for Christian this is life changing. He devoted himself to giving us top notch service as an app developer so we could interact with our loved community in ways Reddit wasn’t able to facilitate. He was quick to answer comments on the subreddit and would implement things we asked for in a reasonable time.

I was so impressed with his work and was sad to hear how u/spez treated him. I just hope we can give him a good bye gift and send him off knowing that the community is grateful.

Without a doubt, it's got to be surreal for him. I can't even imagine.

You know, if he could find a way to re-hook Apollo over to one or more Lemmy instances, I think Apollo would immediately become the default Lemmy client for a whole lot of people. What’s more, I expect that a fairly large subset of those people still haven’t even heard about Lemmy yet, and would suddenly be creating new accounts. That would also help to incentivize people to grant his request, and turn down the refund.

Just a thought. I know there would by necessity be an awful lot of work involved to make such a thing happen… but it would probably be worth it.

Numerous people have asked, Christian’s reply is that he’s not looking at it right now. Honestly, his replies sound like he’s going to take a day long nap on the 1st before thinking about anything else.

I kind'a wouldn't blame him if he did that. The level of vitriol aimed at him in the comment sections of various articles that I've read on this topic is positively staggering. People can be really awful sometimes... and people who are seemingly uninformed and/or misinformed, even more so.

There's a work-in-progress effort called tafkars to create a hostable API relay which Reddit apps can talk to to have it relayed onward to the Lemmy API. If completed, it should allow anything that uses the existing Reddit API to talk to Lemmy with a small app modification. It seems like a bit of a stop-gap solution to me but it's a cool idea.

A dual lemmy/kbin app from him would be fantastic.

Man, Christian is such an inspiration to me, what a great guy. I hope he has success in all of his future projects.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

He has his pixel pals, if you want to support his future projects, check that app out!

What I wouldn't give Apollo to of Fediverse.

[–] cazyius 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You could try the app wefwef. It’s inspired by Apollo and not to bad

[–] Tenthrow 8 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I've looked at it a little bit, I'd prefer an app app instead of a web app, but it seems pretty solid for what it is.

[–] BlueMeww 5 points 2 years ago

Memmy is my app of choice, very heavily inspired by Apollo.

[–] zekiz 4 points 2 years ago

It is an app when you install it. There literally is no downside of using a PWA over a native app

[–] jcalais 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I have pro, but not ultra. Haven’t been able to unlock my purchase since I got my new iPad. Maybe that’s why I’m not getting the pop up now.

[–] cazyius 8 points 2 years ago

If you want to support Christian and Apollo you can purchase the good bye wallpapers at a price of your choice. They are beautiful and you get them in sizes for iPhone, iPad and desktop

[–] setsneedtofeed 8 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

For some reason I’m not my getting this pop up, and the notification tab is glitching out. I tipped him $10 since I don’t seem to be able to opt out of paying. ___

[–] cazyius 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Did you update the app from AppStore?

[–] setsneedtofeed 10 points 2 years ago

That got it. Well, now he got a tip and a refund decline.

[–] Crow 7 points 2 years ago

One of the few apps where I could actually see where the monthly subscription fee was was earned with constant updates and improvements.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Bought the wallpapers too, absolutely stunning!

[–] livesathome472 1 points 2 years ago

Do you think they’ll still be there after the shutdown or should i download them all now?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 years ago

Good move from Christian.

[–] lue 2 points 2 years ago

End of an era.
