The Nottingham Panthers, who play in England's Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), announced Sunday that the organization is "heartbroken at the news of Adam's passing."

Officials stopped the Panthers' game Saturday against the Sheffield Steelers after Johnson was involved in a collision on the ice during the second period. Johnson received emergency treatment on the ice, and players eventually returned to the locker room after he was taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

Nearly 8,000 fans at Sheffield's Utilita Arena were asked to leave the building because of what the Panthers announced as a "major medical emergency."

Bunch of idjits on u tube calling that intentional. Jayzuz.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't think the results were intentional but the action sure seemed like it from the footage. But I don't play hockey so I don't have any first hand knowledge of how his leg could've raised so high unintentionally.

I would be incredibly surprised if it were intentional. Every single player there knows exactly what doing that would mean.

Freak accidents happen, especially in hockey. Malarchuk had his throat slashed by a skate, Pronger took a slapshot to the chest that stopped his heart, and Peverley and Bouwmeester have randomly collapsed on the bench. Somehow all of those managed to survive, it's honestly a miracle it doesn't happen more often.

Morgan Barron had his faced pushed into a skate in April, got 75 stitches in the dressing room, then came back and played the rest of the game with a full cage.

And Bryan Little hasn't played since 2019 after he took a slapshot to the side of his head.

Am I the only one who can't actually see the injury in the video? Whoever edited the original footage removed the most relevant part of the video and made a 2 minute video out of a 5 second clip and didn't even include the useful part of the 5 seconds. Not sure how everyone is able to state with confidence the malicious nature from this poorly edited video.

They seem to have edited out the relevant part, it wasn't when I posted it. Here is another one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iEbxShZKL8

That actually shows it, thank you!

Ice skates would probably be banned if they were invented nowadays. Like, don't get me wrong, ice skating can be fun, but who was the original nutjob who looked at a couple knives and said, "ah, yes, strapping those to my feet and then trying to walk while I'm on an extremely slippery surface is the best idea I've ever had".

Funnily enough the TSA specifically allows them in carry on bags: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/skates

I would think removable blades might be an issue, but who knows ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 year ago

It's all security theater with them anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nah, not when things like the monowheel can survival in the market. Those things are pretty damn dangerous

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Pretty sure there is a massive recall on those.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That recall was related to braking, and most models received an over the air software update to address the issue (the first model was not able, iirc).

[–] Not_mikey 5 points 1 year ago

It wasn't about breaking, it was about people pushing it past its speed/torque limit. Previously if you were getting close to the limit it would push the board back to tell you to slow down, because if you kept leaning forward the board wouldn't have enough power to self balance you back and you could fall over the board. A couple people died pushing past this limit so they added a buzz that will happen when you do to really make it clear, stop you fucking idiot or your gonna die.

I've had the update for a couple weeks now and haven't felt the buzz yet because I never try to go fast on it cause I value my life, haven't even gotten pushback in a long time.

I read about that recall and still see them being used. Darwin Award winners I suppose.

[–] Not_mikey 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you use them within their limits and wear a helmet there sort of fine , like a motorcycle. The recall was because people were pushing them past there limits , which can cause problems. They're like the motorcycles going 90 on the freeway weaving through traffic, in which case the Darwin award is well deserved.

Damn he got Malarchuk'd, fucking scary. Sad he didn't pull through it must've been very bad :(

Rest in peace

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In the uncensored footage he loses like all of his blood before he exits the ice. How he managed to even get up is beyond me.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Adrenaline is one hell of a drug.

[–] Not_mikey 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is why we wear a neck guard kids, the pro leagues really need to start mandating them.

[–] SheeEttin 4 points 1 year ago

Unlikely. The players won't like them. They don't even use full face shields or cages like the NCAA.

Should they? Yes. But they're going to fight it.
